Okay...I'm back from my travels, and here is my "alittle" episode from a few years ago:
At my last job, as a Paralegal who wrote the Child Abuse/Child Neglect/Termination of Parental Rights court complaints for my county, I had to utilize reports written by Caseworkers when I drafted those court complaints.
After I drafted a complaint, it had to be reviewed for accuracy by the child's Caseworker, as well as by supervisors and a Deputy A.G. One of those caseworkers perceived that I had pretty good writing skills, and she asked me to critique her writing. One of her persistent errors that I pointed out to her had to do with her use of the non-word, "alot". In order to help her remember that she should be using two words, rather than utilizing a non-word, I said something along the lines of, "Try to remember that there isn't any word such as 'alittle', and as a result, 'alot' also isn't a word.
A couple of months later, I was reviewing one of her reports when she burst into my office and blurted out, "Aren't you
proud that I remembered what you taught me?"
I had no clue about what she might have been referring to, until she turned to the next page of her report, and pointed to her use of "alittle".
"See?", she said, "I
remembered what you taught me about alittle and alot".
After I regained my composure, I said nothing, but I did resolve to never again engage in any educational efforts in that office.
