The first time I saw the word "menus," I thought it rhymed with venus and genus. I figured from context it mean food (this was before all the pull down menus). Also, I thought "misled" was pronounced "missiled" and the context almost confirmed it. This is in addition to alternate pronunciations, such as "feb-you-ary."

As a kid, Wednesday was slurred to Wens day, not only by me but by nearly everyone around me.

Many mispronunciations are cultural. "Ask" becomes "Axe," "TomAto" becomes "tomaato." "Charlotte" is pronounced differently as the name of a town in Vermont, and "Arab" in Alabama is properly pronounced Ay-rab. (The real name was a misspelling of Arad Thompson, the son of the town founder.)

Macabre and hyperbole. I thought it was mac-a bray and hyper-bowl. Thank goodness for the online dictionaries that have voice pronunciation!

I think we who read a lot more than we listen, are apt to do more of this.

There is a plant called cotoneaster, which, as a gardening-lover, I come across all the time and have even grown it. I don;t think I am alone in thinking it was cotton-easter.

It's actually pronounced kuh-TOE-nee-aster.
