I'm currently majoring in Secondary Education/ English, and I've had an interest in creative writing since I was in middle school, but I've done very little to cultivate it. I used to write poems, short stories, and scenes, but now I'm usually writing an essay or research paper for one of my classes. I want to brush up again and maybe even get something published. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm really interested in creative non-fiction, poetry, and fiction.
I dont know anything about getting published, but I think when it comes to being creative, maybe I can help. For me, its just a day dream, or making humor in an everyday story. I wouldnt call them books, but anytime I make a story floating around in my head, I try to write it down, in a different post in the fourm, I posted a cut out of a story about a man who is a professional chili contest contestant. To me, its about the mind just flowing, but thats the style of person I am, Im just silly, and I write for me, and people like me.
Does your college have a campus newsletter or a literary publication? You might start there and get in on the ground floor with some volunteer writing - that way you're sort of starting your resume. (Few people just pop into the literary world and start being published) Another thing might be to volunteer at a local newspaper - and get 'noticed' for your writing skills. You might even then get hired as a 'stringer' and do some feature stories.. That's how I actually started - by writing letters to the editor about topics I believed in. Then when the local reporter got moved up to a bigger town, I was hired to work locally. That gave me credentials.. When I moved I was able to write for some bigger papers because I had the background. AND, if you get a really good editor, you will learn SO much - and fast! (Talk about accepting criticism of your writiing skills)!!
Good luck - but remember as with any career you usually have to start on the bottom rung and get some experience 'under your belt'..
