Here is what happened to me, with a question at the end.
A very good friend of mine, wrote a book on a subject of great interest to me. So anyway the first time I saw it was in a book store, so naturely I read a little......one part was of particular interest so I got my pen and made a note on my hand.
The store owner saw me doing this and said to me you can't do that, I can take legal action against you for plagiarism. I didn't make a scene.
My question is were his words to me correct? would he need to book writers authority to take legal action? (b/cause no way he would get it, the writer is one of my best mates).
I am no worried in the least, rather just curious!
I believe you are right. The owner of the store can't take legal action against you for doing that. If there was some kind of copyright violation, a lawsuit would have to come from the publisher. The only thing the storekeeper could possibly have done was ask you to put the book down if you weren't going to buy it.
But it's a good thing you didn't open your mouth and challenge him in his own store. That wouldn't have been a good idea.
Store owner was a complete idiot. He was within his rights to say "Sorry, our policy is you can't do that in the store." and kick you out if you didn't comply. Threatening legal action was just plain stupid, and he would have no case in any event. The AUTHOR would hold any such rights, not some dweeb who has books on consignment.

You're not making any money from the note on your hand. And you're not passing it off as your own words or idea. So, let me ask you this; When I decided to write this reply, I clicked on a "QUOTE" option. That button recreated your written words from your first post. Now, do you think you can sue either me or City-Data.com for plagiarism?
How many passages from books and magazines have you seen quoted on the Net? I've seen about a jillion... and you may quote me.
Exactly, guy was a bafoon saying that to me, I was abit blown away.
