.a sequence of weather events will generate a strong surge of wind
through the region. High based showers and thunderstorms will
develop along a cold front over the mountains and foothills this
afternoon. This will strengthen the cold front which will generate
additional thunderstorm activity as it moves through south central
montana. Wind gusts of 60 mph will be common across most of
south central and western portions of southeast montana and
sheridan county wyoming late this afternoon and evening. As the
front moves through southeast montana tonight it will encounter a
developing storm system over the dakotas which will strengthen the
winds behind the front. Very strong winds are expected over
southeast montana overnight and into early tuesday.

...high wind warning in effect from 4 pm this afternoon to
midnight mdt tonight...

The national weather service in billings has issued a high wind
warning...which is in effect from 4 pm this afternoon to midnight
mdt tonight.

* timing...by 4 pm thunderstorms will move off the mountains and
begin producing gusty winds in areas like columbus and
harlowton. Billings will see this activity around 5 pm.
Roundup...hardin and sheridan around 6 pm. Gusty west winds
will continue for a few hours behind the front.

* impacts...a strong and sudden wind shift is expected along the
front. This could cause property damage especially for
construction in progress. Blowing dust from freshly plowed
fields could cause limited visibilities.

* winds...wind gusts from the west of 40 to 60 mph should be
expected. Even stronger gusts could be possible near
thunderstorms. Strong west winds of 30 to 40 mph will persist
for a few hours behind the front.

* lightning...thunderstorms that develop this afternoon will be
active lightning producers so people engaging in outdoor
activities will need monitor the skies.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Winds of these magnitudes can cause property damage without extra
precautions. Motorists in high profile vehicles should use
caution until the winds subside.

.critical fire weather conditions are expected this afternoon
over much of southeast wyoming and the northern nebraska
panhandle due to warm temperatures...low relative humidities
and gusty southwest winds.

weather zone 308 laramie valley/shirley basin...fire weather
zone 309 south laramie range/medicine bow nf and fire weather
zone 310 platte/goshen/central and eastern laramie.

* winds...west to southwest 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

* timing...noon to 7 pm sunday.

* relative humidity...as low as 10 percent.

* temperatures...upper 60s to lower 80s.

* impacts...windy and dry weather combined with dormant grasses
will produce critical fire weather conditions. Rapid fire
growth will be possible for any fires that do initiate.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now...or will shortly. A combination of
strong winds...low relative humidity...and warm temperatures will
create explosive fire growth potential.

The data has all been put together and although this is for the entire US, I thought you'd like to know that we had the driest March on record in the last 124 years. I hope this is not what the rest of the year will be.

...winter weather advisory in effect until 6 am mdt sunday above
4000 feet...

The national weather service in billings has issued a winter
weather advisory above 4000 feet for snow...which is in effect until
6 am mdt sunday.

* timing...periods of snow will occur through tonight. The snow
may mix with or change to rain today...but will change back to
all snow tonight.

* snow accumulation...3 to 7 inches.

* impacts...visibility will be significant reduced...and roads
will be slush or snow covered and slippery at times. Travelers
should be prepared for rapid and drastic changes in conditions
as they travel up higher ridgetops...where snow could be heavy
at times. This includes travel along highway 212 and interstate
90.


Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities...and use
caution while driving.
