You will want to go to the school's web site and look around there. Wyoming's schools are much better funded than a lot of other states so you are in luck there.

Not to disrespect the therapist and SpED teachers that we have in Wyoming, and especially in your area and location of interest... But, it is pretty much hit-or-miss. Someone may have specialized training in facilitating education for children with autism, or perhaps no one will. Even if one has training and experience, that may not translate to effective efforts by the whole team.

I am a therapist, have worked in schools, and have a child who had an IEP while in school. I recommend you do intensive interviews with the district personnel. If they can't arrange that, I would consider it a negative.

Best wishes on getting the right education for your child.

Sheridon DOES have a school for autistic children. Can't remember the name offhand, but it is at the VA compound.

Hi there! I have a 7 year old little girl that is High Functioning Autistic. There are some great resources in Sheridan.

Woodland Park Elementary has an Autistic classroom, they will bus your child to the school no matter where you live in town, they are awesome each and one of the staff have such big hearts. The head teacher and director of the program is Mrs Joannie Thelan.

I highly highly recommend an occupational therapist in Sheridan also. She has her own outpatient facility and is one of the nicest ladies you will ever meet and has a heart of gold. You can tell her I sent you, tell her I am Maddy's mom Kristy. Here is a link to her website and their contact info. Sensational Kids Pediatric Therapy They provide therapy for all age ranges. This was truly a Godsend and helped my daughter function on a weekly basis.

They also have a program called CHAPS which is a horse therapy program for special needs children, a lengthy application but so worth it. The lady that runs it is named Sue, I forget her last name. They raise money every year to provide scholarships as well, so money isn't an issue and it's whatever you can afford if you can.

Wyoming has some the top Developmental services in the country. They have Child Development Centers for babies up to age 5 and then the school takes over and they have done a great job of getting staff up to speed on special needs and Autism.

My husband and I recently relocated to Powell,WY for a employer change for my husband, he loves his company and they are fabulous. Sheridan is a nice town and great place to raise a family. We really love it over here in Powell and are not far from Cody. There are a few more links I will look up and post for you. Lots of resources here in Wyoming... My daughter has excellent staff at the school she goes to here in Powell, they take her swimming once a week in addition to the therapy and one on one education, plus she gets to mainstream as much as she can handle as well so it's really neat. They are talking about taking her skiing now as well with the adaptive PE teacher.

Hope this helps will go look for those links for ya

Here is a link to the Parent Information Center they can offer you resources and help you find services, waiver info, and all kinds of information. They also publish a newsletter called Pics and Pieces about special needs children in Wyoming.
Parent Information Center

Just my personal opinion I do not recommend the Developmental Pediatrician in Casper, when I was at the Sheridan Child Development Center Mom's group in Sheridan when my daughter was in their preschool, a lot of the mom's were very frustrated with her. There is an excellent Developmental Pediatrician, she does require referrals up in Billings,Mt which is hour and 30 minutes drive, but folks from the Sheridan and Cody area regularly go up to Billings for specialists or the big name stores and it's a nice day trip. Anyways the Developmental Pedi's name is Laura R. Nicholson, M.D., F.A.A.P.
The Children's Clinic | Billings Montana - Meet our Doctors As a regular Pediatrician for everyday care Dr Oss in Sheridan is great, she also recommends Dr Nicholson.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I would suggest Sheridan. Joannie Thelan is a wonderful, wonderful lady. You could not possibly ask for a better gal to work with your autistic student.

Hi... the SPED set up in Sheridan School District 2 is wonderful. They are teachers/classrooms integrated throughout the district in all the schools. Over the last couple of years, the SPED classrooms have been upgraded with technology (iPads, smart boards, av systems, etc) to help the kids. The iPads especially have helped out tremendously to assist communication between students and teachers. I can't speak for other districts, but I am very impressed with the SPED department in SCSD2. Contact the district admin offices to talk to the director of Special Education to learn what they can do for you and your child.

Cheers (and welcome to Sheridan if you decide to move here )

border town have a lot of handicap kids. Seem families move with children with special needs move in from States next to Wyoming Because Wyoming has more money and projects and older age requirement (21 instead of 18) then surrounding states.
