Oh, you'd probably do just fine. We're probably too stupid to know when we're being insulted. Just preface everything with that apology you started your post with and no one will mind.

lol

Rock Springs is full of drunken whops, prostitutes, drugs, and porno shops. I think you'd fit in just fine, although it sounds as if the kid would be more at home in other parts of the state. As in, child protective service custody.

There is a job opening in Rock Springs that I'm thinking about applying for, and I feel that chances are decent I'd wind up with the job. Before I saw this job listing, I'd never heard of Rock Springs. The only things I know about this town are what I've read on Wikipedia and in a few threads in this forum.

The thing that makes me nervous about moving to a small town like Rock Springs is that I'm worried it would be full of ignorant, conservative, god-fearing hicks.

My girlfriend and I have lived in large metropolitan areas on the West Coast our entire lives - areas that are very progressive and heavily Democratic. I'm not a "liberal" by any stretch, but if I was to ever vote for a Republican in any capacity, there'd have to be a damn good reason for it. We are also atheist. While my girlfriend and I are lily-white, her daughter is half Mexican. Oh yeah, and then there's the whole "living in sin" thing.

We wouldn't care what people might think about *us*, but we don't want to put my girlfriend's daughter into a potentially hostile situation. If the people of Rock Springs wouldn't be able to handle free-thinking atheists with a multi-ethnic kid, then I'd rather know now, before applying for the job.

Thanks!
Wyoming is pretty much a live and let live kind of place in regards to religion and "living in sin." Rock Springs is also one of the most diverse towns with a big Hispanic population so you should be pretty safe in that regard as well.

Oh, you'll fit right in for maybe two weeks or until someone busts your chops for a unpopular Dixie Chicks comment.

Plenty of multi-ethnic kids in Wyoming, most are American Indians

This is the OP's major concern. If he is not worried about what people think of him then he will be fine. He is worried about his girlfriend's daughter which is a justified concern. So let's answer this question.

WyoEagle, in your view ... this aspect of the OP's post doesn't enter into a legitimate line of inquiry on this thread?

It's only about those "ignorant, conservative, god-fearing hicks" that would be at issue for a mixed-race (hispanic, at that) child? Rock Springs residents actively seeking an opportunity to cause grief for a child?

Somehow, I think you may be misleading yourself about what's really at issue here .... when the OP has already projected upon the folk in Rock Springs the characteristics which he himself possesses that are not at all what the people are like. Given that the child will have most of her social contact with her peer group in school and as neighborhood friends, the implication from the OP is that the "ignorant, conservative, god-fearing hicks" of Rock Springs teach their children to be as bigoted as the OP? Do you really think that's a viable premise, that the children are taught to hate and be aggressive that way by their parents in town?

Okay. To be fair, I'll consider this as a possibility.

Your girlfriend's daughter will likely be treated well. Especially as people will pity her for having a stepdad who is a narrow-minded and judgemental jerk.

Better?

Having lived in Montana and Colorado I have driven through and have stayed in Rock Springs WY quite a few times.

I'm pretty sure Rock Springs has a bridge in which you and your brood can set up housekeeping under being the troll that you are.

My husband and I are staunch liberals, atheist, lived in sin for 3 years before we got married, lily-white and professionals. I grew up in Sheridan and went to college in Michigan. My husband has lived in this town for around 40 yrs. We have never had any problems living our life-style in this small town in eastern Wyoming. You can always find people of like mind anywhere you go. Wyoming is not like the west coast - nowhere is. Wyoming is like Wyoming. If you are not flexible and able to adapt to a very different part of the country then you will not stay long.
