I grew up going to Grand Targhee... this was back when it was a "locals" hill, before the CO Ski developers bought it out, but it looks like it's still fairly reasonable and it was always family friendly. Much better skiing experience there unless you're experts. Might be worth looking into... you're still skiing the Tetons, just the back (snowy) side. They also had family-friendly nightly activities... Wed was casino night (rigged to let the kids win), they had movie nights... we even saw a pre-screning of a Warren Miller flick one year when Targhee was represented and Miller was there for that night! There were indoor and outdoor heated pools, an arcade room (lol... probably long gone), etc... I was easily entertained as a kid there and we usually spent 4 days at T-giving and X-mas there every year.
That's where I would personally pick for a ski vacation, but I've done the Jackson thing too.. hard not to growing up just a couple hours away. No idea on local places to stay though, all my over-nights were at friends places. Just the $30 per person, per day difference in lift tickets would make me look (and holy Carp, when did Jackson go over $100 a day! It was ~$70 last I remember looking... makes the $21 I pay at the hill where my folks live in MT look like peanuts).

Targhee has changed over the years. The lodging is rundown and well overpriced. Lift tickets are still a great value and yes the skiing is fun, however nothing like Jackson Hole. At your price point I would suggest looking at hotels in the town of jackson. The Homewood Suites does offer free shuttle to the ski resort and also provides free breakfast everyday and a free dinner m-th. All their rooms are suites and they have received many praises on trip advisor.
