The federal government has informed Wyoming officials that it will withhold more than $53 million in mineral payments to the state under the automatic federal budget cuts that started this month.
Gov. Matt Mead said Tuesday he received no advance warning before the state received word that the
cuts will be implemented starting this month.

Feds cut $53 million in Wyoming mineral payments - Businessweek

I am beginning to wonder how many unannounced cuts from the Feds can WY sustain? No advance notice.

Pathetic. Somebody who lives (part-time) in a big white house back east doesn't like us.

Take a look at the states that the majority vote was against him and you'll see the states that have had funding of one sort or another, pulled. I wonder how much money the Federal Gov is out, just on the lack of coal production? That had to hurt them.

This can't be due to the sequester because according to the National News, the sequester hasn't stopped a single dime that normally goes out (that was as of yesterda) and that the cuts will be implemented starting with the fiscal year starting on October 1 of this year.

In the later part of last summer there was a big article about tax revenue that was divied up between the states and Wyoming was left off the list. Does anybody remember that? The energy tax is supposed to go back to the states and for some reason, Wyoming was left off the list to receive those funds. I'll have to see if I can find that and post it.

Montana just received notice that their Mineral Payments would also be short about $50 Million +.

While this amounts to (typical) political retribution, it is probably high time we all "get over" this ridiculous idea of "revenue sharing" which has enslaved the once free states of this nation called the US of A.

I guess I don't understand "revenue sharing" and how it works. This money is part of the deal where "WE" lease out the land, "WE" take care of the land, and we split the profits from the land for doing so. Our Partner (Federal Government) has now said they are keeping all of the profit from the land.

The fact that it came instantly is kind of rough on the state figuring out their budget. It's like being on direct deposit for years and all of a sudden for whatever reason, your direct deposit doesn't go in. You know you are ok, you have savings, it's just a matter of straightening out the mess, however, it's devastating to the nerves when that happens. With some warning, the state can prepare and start shifting money from other areas.

Maybe we shouldn't send them the lease money to begin with.

Besides Local and State Government use property Tax to run, If kind of unfair when the Federal dosn't pay property taxes but then gets the Services from the County and State.
