I wrote the post below a week ago and then read some crime statistics on Sheridan, Wyoming and got a little spooked....Can anyone tell me what or if they know anything about this town in more detail and am I being paranoid? I realize the term "sex offender" can mean different things and doesn't always imply the individual is a rapist. I am a single female and want to make sure I am relatively safe before making the big move. So far, Sheridan seems to fit exactly what I am looking for so hope this isn't a deal breaker. On the bright side, the other crime stats like murder, theft, and arson seem relatively low to non existent. Please advise :-) Thank you!

I am a born and raised NW Oregon girl who is looking to move to either Montana or Wyoming in the next year or so. Just trying to compare the two and find the state/town that best suites my lifestyle. I haven't been to either state but plan on visiting both next year. Can you tell me where the best areas are if I am a cowgirl looking to make friends with other horse people? Preferably a location with lots of horse activities/events with plenty of horse barns to choose from to board my horse. Someplace with good nightlife and some fun country bars to line dance, etc? What are the best towns to meet real Cowboys? I would preferably like an area that does have a decent little town with shops, tack stores, Western Clothing/Apparel, and some modern conveniences but still with a true Western vibe/feel. I might add that I don't mind the snow but thinking that 6 months plus of it would get old. I like drier areas strangely enough even though I AM from the Pacific NW where rain is our middle name! LOL

I appreciate any and all advice, thank you!!

For someone liking the country dancing bar scene and who wants to board a horse, I'd have to suggest Billings.

Sheridan is lovely. I own property there and do business there, but a young person's hot spot it is not. I say that knowing what is offered in the local bars and having family involved in entertainment there. The most popular bar plays mostly hip hop with a rare dash of rock.

I have no idea how many sex offenders there are, not what they did to earn that term. Disturbing, though.

You aren worryung for non reason. I used to work at the jail and as able to look up the details on all offenders. Most of those committed their crimes elsewhere and then moved here.

There are 5 levels of sex offenders. The first two, were not even reported on the list because they were 'Urinating in public' type charges and a court panel deemed them not a threat to the public. They did not have the same requirements as the rest, I.e. they could live next to the school, etc... About 7 years ago, our state legislatures passed a law that ALL sex offenders had to be on the list made public. Most on the list were in that category. Of the rest, only 2 or 3 were serious offenders. Those 2 or 3, have livedb in Sheridan for many years and are now in their 60's. All of those years in Sheridan, they never committed a crime again. Some of the others were date rape type thing where it was consentual but they got caught in the back seat so somebody has to be charged and because one was a minor, their testimony didn't count.

You do not have to worry about sex crimes in Sheridan. I raised 4 daughters in Sheridan and never worried about them.

I raised 5 kids in Sheridan, 3 still live here. According to them, the young people sceen is great. All of them loved the Western bands that are live every weekend, locally.

As far as horse boarding, there is boarding all over the place. We have horses here, but don't board. But we do have people stopping all the time to see if we will board. We give them some suggestions and they don't seem to have any problems finding a place. My cousin moved into Sheridan with 2 horses and 2 pack mules. Took him three days to find a house on the edge of town with 4 acres, at a reasonable price. $750 a month. 2 bedroom.

So, Miss LTCR, opinions differ, as they always do.

The best advice is to check out the town yourself, summer is livelier than winter. If you like the town, find a job and have enough money to set yourself up here.

I'm a retired criminologist - one of the very few that actually practiced an entire career in the real criminal world. My wife and I picked Sheridan to retire in because, among other things, the crime rate is so low. One of the things I have discovered since moving here is that the crime stats which make up the public record are really, really far off. They count things here that no one else ever would.

I am reliably - though privately - informed it is a funding mechanism. 'Nough said.

I wouldn't worry about it for a second.

If you come for a visit, stop in to the Mint Bar, about 200 North Main Street. The history of cowboys and cowgirls in Sheridan is well represented on the walls - the staff will be happy to walk you through it. And enjoy your visit!

You're bound to have some sex offenders in just about any city. I find the ratio of residents to sex offenders to be the best thing to look at and it doesn't look bad at all (322 to 1). So, theoretically, you'd have to pass 322 people to see one sex offender and it's likely to be someone who had an "encounter" with a drunk person or got too friendly with a freshman when he/she was 18. Where I live, which is supposed to be fairly safe, the ratio is 35 to 1. I think the ratio is just under city-data's crime stats table; check a few different cities and you'll probably see that Sheridan is pretty normal for its size.
