I would add the 'simple'

"You are so glad to get in the house and up next to the woodstove!"

Whether it is from out plowing snow / doing chores / running to the car for those frozen 'left-overs', or back home from a 'Across-WY-ground blizzard drive...'

It is SO nice to get back in the house, and up next to the woodstove!

One benefit of cold weather is often a lower crime rate. There are many factors and this is not as absolute but hard winters seem to be something that decent folk are more willing to put up with than many of the take the easy way criminals. Of course just about every place has its criminals and some might take advantage of and might make up for the lower "competition". A weather hardened criminal might be "prepared" and a tough problem.

This is an old one so you may have heard it before:

The born-and-raised Wyoming rancher who lived up near the Montana border had to have his place surveyed. The
survey came back and they told him, "Well, you actually live in Montana." To which he replied, "Thank goodness,
I couldn't take another of those Wyoming winters."

An acquaintance from Duluth once told me "Forty below tends to keep the riff-raff away."

And while I'm sure there's a lot of decent people in the following states: Florida, Louisiana, Texas and California seem rife with crime and lowlifes of every strife.

Zero I barely notice. Been close to -20. Other than a step or two more to keep face from freezing, not that big a deal by itself (as long as water pipes don't freeze, electric lines go down or you have to go somewhere far or difficult). And it doesn't last too long. Haven't tried -40 and don't want to.

Stats seem to bear this out. North Dakota virtually always comes in with lowest crime stats in the
nation. Other cold weather, northern states close behind.

But lower population, and rural dispersed population also seems to be a factor. Low crimes states:
ND, SD, WY, VT, for example all have small, dispersed mostly rural population. In a book called,
Bowling Alone, a guy named Robert Putnam looked at the "social capital" of states and these same
states had the highest social capital-which is measured by things like community involvement, etc.
In a small town/rural place, you can't be anonymous, which leads to accountability as well. Where
I live, if you drive like a jerk, for instance, hey we know who you are and where you live. It makes
a difference. I'm sure the cold weather doesn't hurt either.

About four winters ago, was in Great Falls at -45. Holiday Inn Express has some plug-ins. (I know
where about all the plug-ins in MT are) So even tho F250-SuperDuty has gas engine, I plug him
in when it's cold. Watched the Albertans take an hour to get their outfits up and running the next
morning. Even from a physics standpoint, amazing what happens with molecular structure at -45.
Stuff like steel can become fragile. Later up to -36 in Havre, then -17 Billings so t-shirt & shorts?
