I am taking a workshop in town and cannot pay motel prices. I would like to throw up a tent in walking or biking distance without paying more than $15 a night. Is this possible?

Unlikely, as the "normal" season rates at the closest KOA campground for tent camping are $39.00/night. A "deluxe" campsite for tent camping is a few dollars more.

Two problems:

(1) They're 15 miles South of the Jackson city center; too far to walk and not a very good road to ride a bicycle for a 30 mile daily commute.

(2) Their camping "season" closed October 10th.

So, if you're doing this trip this fall, you'd be left without a place to camp ... and a difficult bicycle ride in the dark.

I don't know of any other "tent camping" locations any closer to town. You're a long way from National or State Parks with camping from Jackson.

I have 'stealth' camped north of Jackson near the elk reserve when all other sites were full. Not recommended for a whole night's sleep.

Look into hosteling or private guest homes (directories online, but you have to join either organization), they can usually be had for ~ $20-30/ night. We have a couple guest home directories that we use all over the world, but not locations in every city. I do know there were some in Jackson tho.
or...
You should be able to find a 'less expensive' room for rent since we are 'between seasons'. Maybe post on Craigslist, I have handled some strange needs that way.

I stayed in a hostel in Teton Village a few years ago. I'm sorry, but I don't remember the name of it, but the price was reasonable--around $30 -40 or so. Just mentioning it so you know that at least one exists....

It's called The Hostel but it's 13 miles from Jackson. If the START bus shuttle is running it would work. You could also walk up Cache Creek Canyon in the eastern part of town and throw a tent down. It's free but no services. There used to be a campground right in the middle of Jackson but that's gone. Where is the workshop located?
