I am just looking for some thoughts or ideas. My boyfriend and I are looking at going to yellowstone and because of both of our jobs it looks like we won't be able to get there till the last week of September. I know it will be a bit on the cooler side but I am wondering if it will still be fun to go there or if everything will be closed? If we do go, is there any places that are recommended? Thanks!!

September is a great time. As jody said, the elk are bugling and the crowds are smaller. Also, in late September you may get some fall foliage. I'm not sure if the roads have a date they close or if it is just when the snow gets too deep, so that you may want to check on. If you are camping remember it gets very cold at night any time of the year and it can snow at any time of the year. Enjoy yourselves! It is a trip you won't forget.

Yep, what the others said. I think Sept. is the BEST time to go. Summer = hot, tons of crowds (like, jam packed with people), bugs, etc. Sept = cooler, fall foliage, less people, etc.

It's a good time. Be careful around bull elk - steer clear. Usually they're pretty mild-mannered, but during rutting season they lack a sense of humor. I used to go end of September every year (also spring and summer), and usually got to see some nice fall foliage -- if you can find aspen. We found more colors in the Jackson Hole/Gros Ventre range, as most of Yellowstone is pine trees.

Roads in Yellowstone don't close for the season until early November, though I think Dunraven Pass may close in October.

Aspen will be turning color as will cottonwood - both easily found in the Lamar Valley.

Anytime after labor Day.
Crowds will be gone due to school starting up. Nice Foliage that time of year. Wear are you going to stay. Will you be camping or staying in a RV/Trailer or Truck Camper ?
If you are going to camp, like i like to do. Make sure you have a hard side camper, due to the bears. Pack cold weather gear also.
Have fun and enjoy.
Scott

I agree, best time to go. If camping, take warm clothes, it can get below freezing at night (I remember frozen toothpaste in the morning).

Late Sept in Jellystone has alot of positives mentioned by the posts above.....a few things to be aware of.
Some facilities are closed by mid-Sept, here is info
Facilities' Opening And Closing Dates - Yellowstone National Park

Last time I entered the park it was to stay in a cabin(cheap) at Roosevelt for the last week of Sept. Started snowing as I entered the south entrance, halfway up Craig Pass it was a blizzard. Turned around as they were closing the south gate. I was bummed but the nice folks at Roosevelt refunded my deposit as all the roads were closed from the fall storm. Keep your eyes on the weather before and during your visit.

Fall in YNP brings in hordes of wildlife photogs with their giant lens from all over the world. Elk in Gibbon Meadows in the morning will result in an animal jam of epic preportions. Go to those icon places during the week in late morning to mid afternoon.

That is rut season so watch the wildlife from a safe distance. Please do not stop your car in the middle of the roadway if you see wildlife. Do not attempt to pet wildlife at anytime especially during rut. The best time to view wildlife is early morn and dusk that's why the photogs are there.

The park is big(not nearly as big as the Adirondack Park in New York) but still pretty big.

When you enter the park actually read the printed info the nice person in the booth gives you

Have a great trip

September is a perfect time of year to visit YNP! Bring warm clothes and you may consider spreading yourselves around to explore other areas, too. This is a great time of year to enjoy the gorgeous fall colors.
