My spouse and I are considering a move to North or South Carolina. We are not particularly religious; we attend church sometimes, mostly the Unity church. Will people in North & South Carolina be aghast at that or try to push their religion down our throats? I've heard they come knocking on your door to "have a prayer meeting" at your home. Is this true? We are very open to others' having their own religious beliefs, but don't want their religion shoved on us.
I think what you are being told is a bit over the top. I haven't ever heard of that happening. church is a vital part of people's lives in the South as a whole. However, I don't think anyone will act as mention above.
I've lived here since April 06 and no one has asked me where I go to church or about my faith. The only ones who "knocked on my door" were people following up from churches that I visited.
This area strikes me as being as cosmopolitan as Washington, DC where I moved from. I don't think it will be a problem.
The only door knockers I've ever come in contact with are jehovah's witnesses and that's certainly not a southern thing. And like Brooklyn said above, you might get the occasional question of what church you attend, but that's about it.
I just moved here a little over a month ago and it's much better in terms of that as compared to where I was in Tennessee. I agree with one of the previous posts - this is more city-ish, what with Charlotte being so close and all.
Sure, church is a big part of the South - but it's not like we're in rural Kentucky. You'll find all sorts of people down here - even Jewish people! I think that's cool cause I'm from Brooklyn where there are Jewish people everywhere and then we moved to TN and there was NONE. Now we moved here and there is definitely a better overall cultural mix of people - race, religion, etc. It's not NYC or LA if that's what you're looking for - but it's not culturally empty either. I like it here!
I agree, the only folks who've kncked on my door were the Jehovah's Witnesses as well. Although my wife tells me she gets asked all the time where her husband is while she's at church.
