Here I go again, defending Rock Thrill. It's actually kinda fun, plus perhaps I can lend ya some advice...
Young single professional craving tons and tons of young adult nightlife... yeah, Uptown sounds more that speed. Curious, did this place (RH) seem to better-suit your needs (young professional looking for a town with scads and scads of nightlife) when you researched moving here? You know, when you visited and became familiar with the area before making a commitment? If you are renting, my advice to someone with your young and ample nightlife interests would be to relocate to CLT when oppty presents. If work is in RH, you could just do the reverse commute thing.
I feel obligated to say that my impression and many informed assessments regarding different aspects of RH, such as walkability, seem to differ with yours. Now, Cherry Road at the I-77 interchange - granted, not very walkable, but significant portions of RH are deemed VERY walkable and hold serious potential and great appeal based on same. They may not all have a groc. store or drug store yet, but that is because big box stores are NOT popping up all over the place - most are still concentrated in pretty much pre-existing commericial areas.
There is, in fact, a plan of development and zoning in place. I'm curious as to where it is that big boxes are popping up that you find inappropriate? A few newer upscale small-sized stores have gone up in recent years along Herlong and some new small franchise businesses at Herlong and Heckle, but as far as I know, the residents of those areas have been glad to see what has happened there. Celanese is seeing some new stuff come in, such as at the intersection with India Hook, but that appears consistent with the size, scale, and needs of the neighborhood. Cherry Road is seeing re-development of pre-existing structures.
Me and alot of people I know comment on how there are an above average number of non-chain restaurants in town. Since most of the non-chains aren't where the chains are, and you indicate that chains are all you can find, I recommend the very popular "Places to Eat in Y & L" thread here on CD as a place to start.
The area around Winthrop is quite walkable, and once the Earth Fare comes, will have a grocery store. The nightlife is lacking there, though. I think Manchester Village has the potential to be walkable, but I doubt they will put in a grocery store there anytime soon, and the pedestrian options to cross Dave Lyle are lacking. Other than the crosswalk at Springsteen/John Ross. But to cross there, you have to worry about idiots whipping around the corner turning right, or trying to beat the light turning left, so it's not exactly safe. I can't understand why they don't have a crosswalk on the other side of Manchester (Books-A-Million). Every Friday, Sat night, I see teenagers having to take their life into their own hands getting across the road.
I have lived in Rock Hill for 43 years. It great, but growing like all other places.
