It was announced on Wednesday that the Lancaster and Chester Railroad has been awarded grants by the Federal Railroad Administration. From the FRA press release --

South Carolina — South Carolina Piedmont Freight Rail Service Improvement Program

Up to $8,752,185

Lancaster and Chester Railroad, LLC

Adds three new locomotives, rehabilitates the Catawba River Rail Bridge and upgrades 46 miles of track on the Lancaster & Chester Railroad from Chester to Kershaw, South Carolina, allowing the rail line to support a larger volume of 286,000-pound cars at increased operating speeds.

Federal Railroad Administration Announces More Than $326 Million in Grants to Support Railroad Infrastructure

People will ask how this benefits anyone other than the railroad. Faster trains means the trains will clear road crossings quicker. Heavier loads could mean shorter trains. It also may make companies reconsider rail transport which could take more 18 wheelers off the roads. It may make ADM decide to keep the Kershaw plant open where they may have considered closing it below. If ADM stays open, that means no one will lose jobs because they shut down and will keep tax revenue flowing.
