Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

The Masters Are Definitely Worth A Couple Of Vacation Days

Posted 04-04-2022 at 09:08 AM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

I'll preface with this: If you're thinking that I'm traveling to Augusta, Georgia, midweek, well, no, I'm not.

It's almost that time again, nonetheless. While Major League Baseball has its delayed Opening Day on Thursday, it is also the same day that The Masters Golf Invitational gets kicked off. Your writer will take a couple of days off from work just so he could watch the tourney at the abode, cold drink, couch, and all. Even Tiger Woods, unable...

One Thing (Among Many) To Watch With The Astros

Posted 04-01-2022 at 07:03 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)
Updated 08-24-2022 at 06:07 PM by case44

I'll be talking more baseball really soon on Case's Column, but first, it's this question: When was the last time the Houston Astros lost on Opening Day?

In case a lot of you have forgotten this, it was when the Astros were still members of the National League. That's right. It was in 2012 when Houston last found itself 0-1 after their Opening Day game. After their move to the American League, they've reeled off nine straight OD wins.

Six days from...

And, Perhaps, Keen's Road Will Not Go On Forever

Posted 03-29-2022 at 06:20 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

Back in September, your favorite blogger alluded to Elton John and his farewell tour with a thing he called the "Yellow Brick Road". In that post, I also brought up another artist with a road of his own.

And, as it would turn out soon after, this artist is also in his farewell phase, at least, as far as touring goes.

The latter is Robert Earl Keen, a country/Americana artist who has seen that road go on for forty-one straight years. He'll...

Fifty Years Ago: Your Writer's Family Gathered To Watch "The Odd Couple"

Posted 03-27-2022 at 04:18 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

Hard to believe that fifty years ago, I can still remember Friday nights with my mother, father, and then-baby brother. As a family, we used to watch quite a bit of television. Perhaps, too much!

But whenever Friday night rolls around, I still reflect on a time fifty years ago when Dad was in the living room with me and we'd watch "O'Hara, United States Treasury" on CBS-TV. When it was over at 8:30, we'd skip the "Friday Night Movie" and turn...

Laredo To Lubbock: What Will The New I-27 Look Like?

Posted 03-24-2022 at 06:25 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

Last week saw many roadies rejoicing. Not just that, but many West Texans had plenty of reason to celebrate. The excruciating wait is finally over!

Interstate 27 had been in existence since 1992, but has, so far, been limited to just the connection between Amarillo and Lubbock, the only link to the rest of the Eisenhower system being I-40. Many years have been spent on studies, speculation, ideas, and rumors about I-27 actually becoming a big corridor. Sure, we've...
