I live in Texas and San Antonio no longer has better amenities, other than being home to the NBA Spurs. Austin's demographics (more college graduates) has attracted more high end retailers the past 10 years. In terms of dining, both are pretty good places for grub.

But remember Austin hosts SXSW, the Austin City Limits Musicfest (two weekends), Food and Wine Fest, Caribbean fest, UT sports, Sixth street nightlife and the American Formula 1 Grand Prix. Also in 2016, they hosted their first PGA event in March.

San Antonio has SeaWorld, The Riverwalk, Six Flags, the PGA Valero Open and the Spurs.

Both are close to rivers/lakes and Hill Country getaways.
