Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Reflecting On A Major Influence In My Early Years

Posted 01-02-2017 at 08:53 AM by case44

When I was a little baby, my parents always had the television set on, no matter what. I watched whatever they had on, and so, I was stuck with it. But what a fascinating time in my then-young life that actually was, the tail end of the decade of the 1960s.

As I grew older, I had an interest in playing drums, and the big catalyst occurred on that same television set that mom had on. Back then, the medium had many variety shows on during prime time hours. One of those old series was called "This Is Tom Jones". If you're old enough to remember the old ABC-TV show, then you know what I mean. The drummer on that program would sometimes be seen front and center (when the show was filmed in Hollywood, as opposed to England). I remember that drummer, but for years, I did not know his name, but I saw him play on the tube. I just didn't know who it was. And it wouldn't really happen until the internet came along, and also for DVDs to be distributed with clips from the old series. Oh, who was that drummer, you ask? His name is Chris Slade.

You may be familiar with him if you're a heavy metal fan, as in recent years, he'd been the drummer for the group AC/DC. But back in the 1960s, he was essentially Tom Jones' drummer. I mean, he did practically everything Tom did in that decade, dating back to when he, Tom, and a few other guys had a group called The Squires. They'd get some early exposure on British TV before Tom hit it big on his own. Chris Slade was that drummer. And because of his playing on television, that's what inspired me to get into playing drums.

Long since, I've sold my set (the second one I've ever had and the one which I got while in junior high) to a since-closed music shop. If I ever my out of my apartment and into a house where I can actually do some playing, then I'd like to get one more set specially designed to fit my taste. In the meantime, I've got Chris Slade to thank for whatever contributions I've made on the drums for a number of years, just wishing I could do a little bit more. Gratitude extended.

Thanks, Chris.

You can actually catch a few of those clips on YouTube. Just search with Tom Jones and you'll find some. The pictures tell the story.
