Welcome To Case's Column
Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken.
Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.
In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

More Highway Talk: OKC Sees New Interstate Signage On Turnpikes And Other Roads

Unlikely, you say. This writer and road fanatic swore he hasn't heard any rumors, but he didn't expect this.
You see, the Oklahoma City road landscape has significantly changed in a big way. Some of the existing roads now have new designations. I'd never seriously think this would happen, and I thought there might have been rumors previously about such changes like I'm about to share. Regardless, back in March, the powers that be have determined the following situations:
The Kilpatrick Turnpike is now designated as Interstate 344. Wait a minute, Case. That's a loop; how in the fudge does it get a spur prefix and not one for a loop?? I'll explain shortly.
The Kickapoo Turnpike is now designated as Interstate 335. It forms an eastern loop connecting I-40 and the Turner Turnpike segment of I-44. There is a stub at the south terminus, and it's reported that that may traverse southward to meet I-35 around Norman at some point in the future.
OK Highway 152, a short freeway right by Will Rogers World Airport, will now be designated as a western extension of I-240. How that works is, 240 will now be multiplexed with I-44 for a couple of miles from its previous western terminus and then follow OK-152 until it separates from its freeway element as a side street. The freeway continues as the Kilpatrick Turnpike as it goes further west, so it's there that it assumes the I-344 designation.
Explaining what I've brought up earlier about I-344, the way I see it is, one turnpike runs into another at I-35 and sees a play off of I-44, thus inheriting the spur designation instead of an even number for a loop. In other words, this was not going to be I-844 or I-644. So, the powers that are have settled on having this loop as a spur as if it were just a straight line.

Changes abound, both on maps and in the physical landscape. These are exciting, unexpected, but welcome adjustments and improvements to road life in Oklahoma City and in the Sooner State. I look forward to some interesting travel in the future.
Now, if they could just get the I-35/I-240 interchange reconstructed....
