Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting / Remember Those Old TV Announcers?

Posted 02-27-2017 at 08:54 PM by case44

Taking you around and around with more Scattershooting on your friendly neighborhood blog, I humbly welcome you back to the outpost known as Case's Column. Gather around the computer campfire, everybody. I'm fresh out of marshmallows, but maybe we can do burgers.

Every now and then, Ol' Case likes to take people on a trip down Memory Lane. Do you remember those old voiceover specialists on television back when we were growing up? I mean, especially at the time when programs ended on a network and you'd then see and hear some promotion of an upcoming show or a simple network identification. Back when we had our rabbit ears, you'd see CBS or ABC or NBC (most notably, the first two but definitely the first one) try to scare younger viewers.

Below is a montage of things collected and saved up on YouTube through the years. Pay attention, if you will, to the different announcers saying, "This is CBS". What you see doesn't even come close to scratching the surface.

And now, here are the other networks:

Didn't you used to get scared at those IDs as a kid? I did.

Frisco's (Texas) Omni Hotel is not far from being finished, and will definitely be on time for its summer opening. Temporarily, it will be the tallest building in the city, but will soon be surpassed by another new project, Wade Park's new Langham Hotel.

Here's the article with the details and the pics.

President Donald Trump is accomplishing more in his first month in office than most before him could do in one to four years. If you like people keeping their promises, then you'll appreciate someone like that who will get results.

That said, I really wish people would stop being so down on President Trump. Seriously. People are wasting their times and energies on angst in the wrong places. There was plenty of reason for me not to tune in to the 89th Academy Awards, for want of an example. Too much political ranting by some crybaby Hollywooders. We get it, Hollywood. You hate this country and you hate President Trump. Wait until things get better in America by the time Trump finishes his first term in office; then, what are you going to cry about?

By the way, ratings were down for last night's show. Much deserved, unfortunately. People are tired of political rants, and they're not going to tune in supposed entertainment programs to have political views shoved in their faces. Second-lowest ratings in history, too. Perhaps these Hollywooders need to brush up on their organizational skills, since they messed up the big climax of the show last night. Comical.

They need to put less concentration on attacking conservatives (really, the American people) and more focus on lauding those who have won the award and the efforts toward making that movie work. It can't be that hard.

As for the landscape in Washington, Donald Trump is our President, and I could not be happier. He's not a politician. He doesn't have to be. He's taking a stand for America where no one else could. He's our President. Accept it, folks.

Funny how I live near a major international airport and haven't taken more time watching airplanes land. There are two landings located just six miles from my apartment and only two miles apart, and I could easily just pull over by the side of the road and watch planes land at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. What I get a big kick out of are those lights at the beginning of the runway at night. Ever see those? Those are pilot guide lights to help pilots land aircraft safely on the runway once they are cleared. They flash successively from front to back if you view the arrangement that way.

Atlanta is not far from seeing the Braves' new ballpark, SunTrust Park, open up for the first time this year. It's a cozy, 42,000-seat yard in Cobb County, located in Atlanta's northern suburbs. I still wish the franchise has waited several more years to move, since Turner Field wasn't really in bad condition. As it is, Braves officials feel that their fan base is up north, so north they went.

More Memory Lane.............uh, memories. One of my favorite TV shows from many moons ago was "Emergency!", a former Saturday night staple on NBC. Well, I recall how Jack Webb, the tight-fisted, fast-talking, old-time producer who starred in "Dragnet" and also helped create "Adam-12", spent little time on "Emergency!" after the pilot. The show didn't stay tight and stiff. If you notice as the years went by, the show relaxed and loosened up. So when Jack wanted to do a new pilot for a new show in 1974, he used an episode of "Emergency!" and stiffened up his players again. By the time, the show was finishing up its fourth season. The name of the episode was "905-Wild", but it would never make it past pilot status. It starred Mark Harmon, whom you know as Agent Gibbs on CBS-TV's "NCIS". I also know him as Pam Dawber's husband, but I digress.

That episode on "Emergency!", however, was forgettable. What a waste. The animals, though, were cute, but they should have just had a regular episode instead and just let NBC have Jack do a pilot on its own. Would've probably been better.

In case you're counting, it's thirteen days until we change our clocks and watches for Daylight Savings Time. We spring forward. Meanwhile, the first day of spring is twenty-one days away.

As much as this writer had been talking about Interstate 69, it's no longer Texas' newest interstate. I-14 is now in the game. Right now, it's unsigned, but the assurance markers and overhead signs will be up by fall of this year. If and when it's complete (and it will be many years), along with the branches in the I-69 network, Texas will have added approximately 1,500 miles of new interstate lanes to a state which already leads America in interstate highway miles.

Regarding I-14, new drawings for potential routes have now eliminated the western section of U.S. Highway 190 from consideration, with TXDOT apparently deciding to go a more northerly direction with San Angelo and Midland. That would give I-14 some 500 miles of roadway in Texas. Man, we've got long roadways, don't we?

********

Guess it's about time for me to go beddy-bye. This will be an opportunity to dream about those roadways, since traveling Texas is my thing.

And there you are.
