Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Roanoke's Oak Street Taking On More New Development

Posted 09-07-2020 at 06:21 PM by case44

Something new always goes up in my little corner of the world. Just take a look at Oak Street in Roanoke, Texas, if you don't believe me.

Portions of the roadway are experiencing boatloads of new buildings, and I'm not sure yet what will take place in some of them. Some finished buildings near the central and northern ends still don't have tenants. At the south end, there is actually more progress. Los Compadres Mexican Cantina has already set up shop in a building right across the sidewalk from the new Roanoke City Hall. Got to just love that clock at the top as it overlooks Oak Street. That'll be a hoot to look at at night.

My lands, have you seen some of the adjacent streets which feed into the development? They're all torn up and having to be rebuilt. Truth be told, all of those streets were in bad shape and bad for tires to tread, so all of the moves, like them or not, make sense. Take the pain now; it will pay off big time later.

And speaking of later, let's give a shout out to one of my new favorite Mexican food eateries, Los Molcajetes. The COMING SOON sign is already up on the old Rancho Martinez building, and LM will be heading over there by this coming spring. Can't wait. I'd like to hope to start a tradition that involves it at some point. It will also join Funky Baja's as they, too, will drop anchor on Oak Street. The old reliables such as Classic Cafe, Oak Street Pie Company, Babe's Chicken Dinner House, Hard Eight BBQ, and Inzo's Italian will still be around for the hungry masses. New incomings have included Oak Street Food & Brew, the ChopShop, and Wise Guys Pizzeria. They ought to encourage new shops along the corridor, as well, so we'll see what comes with the new buildings.

Give the road work a little bit of time, y'all, and when it's done, it will make a gulf of difference in better accessing Oak Street. Rest assured that you can join me at Los Molcajetes when they finally move from their current location on U.S. Highway 377 into their new digs on Oak Street. I'll save a table for you.
