Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

H-E-B Making Serious Inroads In Lubbock and Dallas

This is the stuff that can only be made in Texas. H-E-B grocery stores have been the main go-to for folks in a big chunk of the state of Texas, most notably Midland, San Antonio, Austin, Houston, as well as the central and southern parts of the state.

Well, sports fans, that's changing now.

Here comes H-E-B to places like Lubbock and (drumroll, please....)...........the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. I'll get to the latter in a moment, but first, let's look at Lubbock. They've long courted this grocery chain, and now, they finally have it in their fair burg. Look no further than 114th Street and Quaker Avenue in good ol' South Lubbock. Another location being looked at is West Loop 289 and 19th Street. Competition has never been welcomed more than now, and the Hub City is growing a little faster than people are thinking. And from what I've heard, the success is outdoing the hype. Look for Wolfforth and possibly the central part of Lubbock to make a dive at this Texas legend real soon.

Now, on to D/FW. To be technical, H-E-B has actually been on the outskirts of the Metroplex for many years, as the franchise already had stores in Burleson, Waxahachie, and Cleburne. They're just now getting into the potatoes and gravy and going after the rest of North Texas, and the experimental monkeys of note are Frisco, Plano, and McKinney. The first two were announced about a month ago, but McKinney's cat just came out of the bag once I woke up this morning. This is only the beginning, as ground has already been broken on the Frisco and Plano locations, and both will take a year to build. Folks, I have to tell you that this writer will be among its first customers the moment they do open. And I predict that there will be many more locations in the next five years. Prosper, the U.S. Highway 380 corridor, Denton, Arlington, Dallas, Fort Worth, Duncanville, Lewisville, Roanoke, Mansfield, Grapevine, Garland, Rockwall, Forney, Southlake, the Park Cities, and many more will be certain to follow, a few of them expecting to contain multiple locations. Competition is healthy. I'm not expecting Kroger or Tom Thumb to be driven out of business any time soon; D/FW is too big for that to happen. There's just more competition now, and that's only a good thing.

H-E-B is exploding with prosperity right now. The only places they aren't at this time are El Paso, Tyler, Longview, Amarillo, and the Texomaland corridor. For now, though, they'll take their newest acquisitions and welcome them with open arms.

Not bad for a chain founded by a fellow whose last name is Butt. . Really. Just look it up.

HEB's new Frisco location has a partial shell of a building going up. Just a couple of walls beginning to take shape. It's fun to watch it go up.
