Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

The Lubbock Economy Just Got A Little Bit Cheesy

Lubbock has had its hits. It's had many misses (too many to admit) down through the years. The city just got a new performing arts center, but now, a big company is about to do something very big.

How big?

Denver dairy company Leprino Foods is proposing a 258-acre manufacturing plant east of State Loop 289 and north of 19th Street. It's the city's newest, biggest project they've had, bigger than the failed College Baseball Hall of Fame project that they should have nailed down when they had the chance. Well, this Leprino project will be the Big Cheese. And hopefully, the Hub City will see other corporations and companies follow suit on the Caprock. Because agriculture is a very big deal in that part of Texas, a dairy company doing manufacturing and contributing to the area's economy just makes perfect sense. Among the things this plant will bring is a lot of mozzarella. Atsa lotsa moz-za-rel-la.

Pizza parlors and entrepreneurs will be taking notice as construction will take about three years, anticipating a 2025 open date. Things will be mooooo-ving right along.

    Seems like lately the economic development people there have announced new job centers every few months. Not like this, but they’ve done a pretty good job nonetheless.

    Imagine if Lubbock had a decent skyline downtown....

    Think of how many more people would come into this city, business or otherwise, if Lubbock would just build a 30 or a 40-story building downtown, and then feature the completed product on the cover of Lubbock Magazine. Not only that, shoe, but, also, the Visit Lubbock site. Promotion is what this city needs to be about for Texans to redirect their attention away from Dallas, Houston, Austin, Fort Worth, and San Antonio. It can be done.

    Yep. Wonder if that surface parking lot on the west side of Ave. M between 13th and 14th streets would be a good location for that. Maybe have businesses on the bottom 15-20 floors and residences on the top floors. Put in a garage on the south side of the property, or across 14th Street on the surface lot there.
