Welcome To Case's Column
Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken.
Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.
In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Coach Knight Might Be A Big Reason Many People Have Moved To Lubbock

All a West Texas city needed were great words from a legendary coaching figure. Texas Tech University had some great casting of characters through the years. And none, I believe, were bigger than one Robert Montgomery Knight.
There was plenty of reason to purchase the book "Knight: My Story" after putting it off for many years (and so, Ol' Case purchased it online for use on same, but that's not important now). In a city like Lubbock, where there were many naysayers and Debbie-downers through the years who'd practically killed any progress that city would make (some of them likely just some bums lazing around in their underwear in a basement), it would take a guy like Bob Knight to become a game-changer for the area. Pun intended. Contained in the book were good words about the Lubbock area. He'd been heard and quoted from other media outlets in regards to his praises of the city. And people listened.
Bob Knight, no matter what you've heard about him, was a great ambassador for Lubbock. He was a great proponent of it. Since his book came out, the city had only grown more than it ever has, and it's been a good two decades since. It wouldn't surprise me if people were drawn to that city by him, either because he coached basketball at Texas Tech or if they've read about or heard things from him in the media. Could what we see in Lubbock now be The Knight Effect?? Whatever it is, it's created new believers in a city poised to take that next step. Even if folks won't readily admit it, those related to Tech have certainly read Knight's book or picked up on a positive thing he said about Lubbock. And it's certainly possible that his very influence led to some people moving in and then those people would encourage others to make their move in. And so on. And so on. You get the idea.
Lubbockites who have wanted positive change have Coach Knight to thank.

Agree 100%. People will also mention Leach (and they have a point when they bring up the 2008 season and one game in particular), but he always seemed have one foot out the door, unlike RMK.
The latter continued to live in Lubbock after retirement, until a few years ago. I know the reason why he moved, and it had nothing to do with his opinion of the place.
Others who likely deserve some credit are Delbert McDougal, John Montford, and Kent Hance. The current mayor Dan Pope and probably Mahomes deserve credit for keeping the ball rolling (I’m sure I left out some important people).Posted 05-05-2022 at 10:12 AM by shoe01

You can make a good case for Mahomes, shoe. He's certainly given Tech a lot more publicity. And Knight has also influenced Chris Beard (who almost won a national title at Tech), who then brought out Mark Adams, who I believe will have a long tenure in Lubbock.Posted 05-05-2022 at 03:05 PM by case44
