Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Nothing's Changed In The Automotive Service Business

Posted 09-26-2022 at 04:59 PM by case44

Ask almost any consumer, and you'll see that people must sometimes deal with B.S. every time one wants honesty. I took my Toyota in today to my dealer and their service area just loves playing musical chairs from one visit to the next. No two service advisors will ever be the same.

And this afternoon's visit (as I write this chickenscratch, of course) saw me needing to get only two air filters replaced. That's all I requested. Well, my advisor for today's visit also told me that I was due for an oil change. I had intended to get one in about another three thousand miles. To preface, one advisor told me that I can get synthetic oil changed every ten thousand miles, and that came at a time when I first got this car. Two advisors later, nothing new happened. Today, though, my advisor for this day said that the car needs an oil change every five thousand miles. Yes, even for synthetic oil! He explained that fittings can get worn out quickly if service isn't performed, thus affecting the car's performance. He also stated that some advisors use the ten-thousand mile bit as "just politics". Really? Out of all the oil changes and other services I've gotten through my long years on God's green Earth, and this guy sez "it's just politics". The auto industry is going through enough right now with all the hate coming from politicians, but it hasn't helped its own corrupt customer service reputation by not getting on the same page when it comes to something as simple as frequency of oil changes.

So, I got the services done and paid for them, though I actually hoped for a sharp discount since the advisor promised the services to be done in ninety minutes or less. They took an hour and 45 minutes. When I was given the multi-point inspection as they "determined" what potential problems my car might be having, I walked away as I often do with the feeling of doubt. Skeptical. I was skeptical about the list of things that, in all probability, don't really need to be done.

Discernment really should be the reaction of choice at a time like this. Maybe it's time I take my car elsewhere, but then again, the dealership has to be accountable, especially if a mistake happens with the service. Honesty must reign again in the car service business.

Actually, it must reign at all.
