Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

I Err To The Side Of Caution, But Ben Verlander May Get It Right

Posted 05-10-2024 at 08:07 PM by case44

Every now and then, I like to pull up YouTube, even on my smartphone. There, what I'd often go to is a podcast hosted by Ben Verlander and Alex Curry to get a little baseball opinion fix. Ben, as some of you may know, is the brother of current Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander.

And if you've seen Ben's baseball shows, you know that he's opinionated. I especially like his take on my Houston Astros. You see, once upon a time, the Astros have been labeled a dynasty after their 2022 World Series win, their second such title in the now-sixty-three years of baseball life in H-Town. These same Astros have, for years, gotten the better of the New York Yankees in both the regular season and in the postseason. This year, however, the Astros are off to a sluggish start. Now, for a big chunk of this franchise's life, Houston has had notoriety for always getting off to a slow start, but the reason this year's start has actually surprised some people is because of the high expectations given to the team as a perennial contender.

Ben Verlander has said on his podcast that the Houston Astros still own the New York Yankees, even though the Yankees have just finished their regular season slate against the Astros and have beaten them, 6 games to just one. Okay, baseball will have its swings (pun intended ) now and then, but Ben doesn't want to believe any other way except in the postseason, where the Astros have long had success against the Yankees. And even though I made my prediction that Houston will again win the World Series, it has proven to be a jinx thus far. So, I've had to temper my expectations with a dose of realism. Ben thinks the Astros will be fine, and not just because his brother pitches for them. I love his optimism, but I have to hope that he ends up right.

In addition, I want to see Joe Espada do well as a first-year major league manager. Right now, he's under heavy fire from impatient fans and some members of the sports media. That aside, if the Astros can just pick up the pieces and get into a good groove and win, then the negative garbage will all be forgotten.

Ben, I just hope you are right in the end. The Astros' dynasty can't come to an end yet. And if they have to trade a few key pieces for an impact player and some good minor league prospects, all the better, so long as they win. At the end of the day, that's all that matters.

If this week has been any indication, I think your orange guys are making a comeback. That Loperfido is showing a lot of early promise.
