My Daily Life and Thoughts while in San Diego | List of Best Posts
This blog is where I express myself to the world or at least to those who might stop by to read what I post . Maybe God will use what I post (I am a Christian and this blog will have a most decidedly Christian bent to it) to good effect in the lives of my readers.

I may turn some of my posts into a book. I may cease blogging here altogether. Who knows. But for now..I am content to post away in this, my own little corner of the world.

Rather than reading through my now lengthy list of posts you may wish to read what I consider to be my very best posts or you can just read the posts that deal with a single subject category that might interest you.

Please know that I am open to any input on any topic I write about. If you have something to say about anything you see written here please....feel free to speak up in the form of leaving a comment or sending me a PM (private message).

And if you are in San Diego and wish to meet the one and only Carlos (that's me )...drop me a private message. I always enjoy meeting one of my readers!

Thanks.

Carlos

Some really great computer applications I've found recently!

Posted 06-10-2009 at 11:15 AM by carlos123

While most of my posts lately have revolved around Christian subjects of one kind or another, or on my personal circumstances, I am not so interested in heavenly things that nothing on Earth ever interests me. Nor do my personal circumstances always merit a blog post.

In this post I want to highly recommend a few computer applications I have found recently that are nothing short of fantastic at least with respect to my needs and way I operate on my computer. They may do the same for some of my readers who may want to try them.

The first such application is an editor, really a programmer's editor called Geany. It is absolutely the very best editor for programming tasks that I think I have ever used in my life!

Until recently I had download this editor and it kept popping open on my screen every time I tried to open up a PHP file as Geany was the program associated with PHP on my computer.

Something I just didn't bother to set right and I am glad I didn't!

I began to see the failings of the editor I had been using for a long time called Bluefish and decided to see if there might not be a better one.

There under my very nose was Geany which I had already downloaded a long time ago but which I had never really bothered to evaluate!

It has features like you wouldn't believe! Code folding, compiling of PHP files inside the editor, selection of text by rectangular column as opposed to by line, tag completion, automatic insertion of code snippets, ability to automatically pull up context sensitive help for a given PHP tag at my cursor from off the web, and the usual assortment of other more standard features that most editors have. Like syntax highlighting, source code line display, tabbing of open files, and so forth.

The only editor I have ever used that comes close is Homesite under Microsoft Windows. But that one cost $99 15 years ago!

Geany is absolutely, 100% FREE!

And...it is available for both Linux and Windows platforms.

Yesterday I was looking around for a better bookmark manager than the one that comes with Firefox and I found an Add-on for Firefox called ReminderFox.

I practically live inside the Firefox browser and ReminderFox was just...well...a natural fit with how I work on my computer.

While I have not worked with ReminderFox like I have worked with Geany it appears to be no less than Geany in it's respective market niche of helping remind users of various appointments, todo's, and other such things.

It is platform independent in that Firefox runs under both Windows and Linux and is well worth a look if not actual use.

If you enjoyed this post and want to see more like it please let me know in the comments and I will post more in the Computers and Internet category I have set up for these kinds of posts.

Carlos
