I caught an old episode of the "Waltons" last night and it brought me back to my childhood. (Back to "simplier" times!)...My Dad used to call my younger son "John Boy" when he was small. My son loved it! (And remembered it all his life.)...You'd never catch my older son watching old reruns of the "Waltons" or "Little House on the Prairie." But my younger son loved watching these shows because they gave him a "window" into the past. And they were about families...My older son took pride in being a "modern" and "with the times" kind of guy! I'm sure he viewed the rest of us as "old grey mares" because we enjoyed telling "tales" from the past. And taking trips down "memory lane."...My younger son "ate" it all "up" and kept begging for "more" when we started sharing stories from the past. He said this gave him a chance to get to know us even "better." And he loved hearing about life back in the "old days."...Both of my sons are gone now along with my husband and parents and everyone else. I am the only "apple" left on my "family tree." Watching the old episode of the "Waltons" last night helped me feel like I was part of a family again. (And this was sure nice!)

Mealtime Memories...Past and Present

Posted 03-31-2014 at 12:50 PM by CArizona

I was going to name this blog: "Cook-a-Doodle-Doo!" (Just to be silly and have a little fun!)...But the focus isn't going to be solely on cooking. I want to talk about meals...Meals we've shared with family and friends all through the years. Or meals we eat alone...Right now, I'm a "lonely only" (most of the time) when it comes to eating. (Since my husband and sons and other loved ones passed-away.)...I try to make my meals "special" for myself. And "memorable!"...But I miss having company too.. My son's cat Gracie usually "checks-out" what I'm cooking and eating. So I'm not totally alone!

Time to play "true confessions!" I was a "condiment-freak" and addict for most of my life...It started when I was a kid. My Dad used to tell me to "smother" food I didn't like with ketchup or mustard or vinegar or some other condiment. (To "mask" the flavors!)...But, I ended-up taking it "too far" as I got older. I literally became addicted to condiments. (In general!)..By the time I was in my 20's, I "smothered" everything I ate with salsa. (Red salsa, green salsa and you name it!)...Over the past few years, I've cut way back on condiments. And it's nice! Everything doesn't taste "the same" anymore!...Sometimes, I even have to throw condiments away because they sit and sit in my frig and don't get "used" very often...I guess we can get addicted to anything! Condiments "served" as my pacifier or my baby blanket or ?? I think they helped me feel "connected" and "bonded" to my Dad...But, I'm glad I finally "broke free" from my lifelong addiction. YEA!!

I'm going to have to come up with some new recipes (and ideas) for pasta...All of my existing sauces seem kind of boring right now. Blah! "Same old, same old!" The opposite of exciting or enticing!...I need to invent some new recipes in general. Time to expand my "horizons!"...I think I'm just bored with my own cooking and I'm tired of eating alone day after day. Sure miss my family!

I'm finally getting back to cooking...Being creative in the kitchen. (Again!).. Throwing "weird stuff" together and hoping for the "best!"...I'm having fun inventing new recipes. It feels good to get back in the "saddle" again!

One of my friends eats the same basic things week after week. He reminds me of my Dad. My Dad used to stick with his favorites and old "stand-bys" most of the time...I know my Mom wanted a little more variety and diversity. But, she cooked meals to please my Dad. She didn't "rock the boat" or suggest something new and different (very often) when it came to meals at home...Every so often, my Mom had lunch out with her friends and "spread her wings." She felt free to order anything she wanted...I sure miss going out to eat with my Mom. And, I miss the traditional meals she cooked at home too...I try to vary what I eat. (Versus getting stuck in a rut!) But sometimes, I rely on old "stand-bys" too just because they're easy and familiar. How about you?

Have you noticed that your "tastes" seem to be changing? Have you started to feel bored with some of your all-time favorite food and dishes? I have!!...These days, I'm not sure what to cook or eat, or what I want! And, it drives me crazy!!...I used to know myself so "well!" Life was easy!...Now, I'm never sure if I'll end up liking what I cook or order in a restaurant.. I force myself to eat what's in front of me anyway. It's not my nature to waste food...But, sometimes, the "thrill" is "gone." Have you ever felt this way?
