The Trades are NOT desperate for workers. I can't even get a chance.

In this post I will debunk the 'skills shortage' and supposed need for trades workers like HVAC, and Machinists. We hear all day about how nobody wants to work these jobs but the real reason there is nobody working them is because companies refuse to train people for these jobs, and if they are hiring, they want you to have years worth of experience. Even for so called apprenticeships. To prove this, all you have to do is go on your local craigslist jobs section in skilled trades, and you'll find that at least 98% of the jobs advertised are hiring EXPERIENCED ONLY.

Every opportunity wants previous experience. There is no training. Just like all other fields of work, true entry level doesn't exist anymore. The new entry level means at least 2-3 years of experience required. That includes the trades that are so "short" of workers and so "desperate" to hire. Oh boy you are so desperate alright.

You can't just have a certification or high school diploma and get hired. You need experience first, that nobody will give you I might add.

Quote:
Electrical contractor in ******* is now hiring electricians and Helpers/Apprentices with a minimum of 3 years experience. Majority of work is commercial work in the ******* area.
Electricians and apprentices needed

This isn't an apprenticeship because if it was they would train someone from the ground up. They are asking for 3 years of experience.

Another one:

Quote:
HVAC/R service technician apprentice needed for part time. Must have own transportation. Minimum one-three years experience. Commercial A/C and refrigeration. Well established company..
Reply with resume or facts/background about self and leave contact info.
HVAC/R SERVICE TECHNICIAN APPRENTICE

Here's a CNC one. Not so desperate it seems.

Quote:
Candidates must have 2-5 years of CNC background, be reliable, able to understand blueprints, be physically astute and be able to read and edit G codes.
Need a 2nd Shift Machinist ASAP!

So next time someone tells you the trades are desperate for workers, just go on your local craigslist and see the truth before your very eyes.

The Trades are NOT desperate for workers. Surely if there was a shortage there would not be these strict requirements. If the shortage was real, these companies wouldn't be demanding what they are. Maybe it's different in places like North Dakota or Texas, but here in Massachusetts, there is no shortage of anything. Well, maybe a shortage of people with functioning brain cells.

If you want people to work in trades, stop asking for 3 years of experience. Idiots.

You said it! I have a degree from a trade school in Printing and Graphics and it's the same story here too! Even during the last semester I was required to do an internship, but I ended up doing the school's program internship because I couldn't find a nearby print shop even remotely interested in me working pro bono for them-even if it is just to gain this so called valuable experience! Don't get me started on another program I completed at the same school prior to this-you guessed it, no experience no thanks is their attitude. I will enjoy the day (if it ever comes) when the power shifts and maybe these employers will get over themselves thinking they are entitled to some mythical unicorn employee that doesn't exist? keep up the good work, great post!
