Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting / Someone Please Take The Tree Down

Hi, again, everyone! The New Year is well underway, and some of you have made resolutions.........and broken them. My only real resolution is to keep writing for you, and I could never break that. It's that time again for more here and more there, and a little more everywhere as we go Scattershooting once more on Case's Column. I'm just chock-full of news, views, and other things this time around, and I'll do my best to bring it all without taking too much space.

********

Speaking of taking up space, the people at my work decided that January 15 was late enough for the Christmas tree to remain in the lobby. Notice that I said January 15. That's fiddeen. A good twenty or so days after Christmas. Heck, it's almost Valentine's Day, and that darn tree was still up. I don't honestly know what took them so long to take it down, as management had stated in the past that all the Christmas decorations building-wide needed to be down by January 1. Nothing against Christmas or anything, but spring is closer than a lot of people think.

There has been a casualty of sorts at KOKE-FM in Austin. My good friend Tom Allen, longtime jock in Austin and the host of KOKE's "Country Gold Show", recently fell while trying to get into his jeep, and he broke his knee. After a very complicated surgery, he'll be rehabbing for a few months before heading back to the studio to do more of his Saturday get-togethers. Tim Williams will be filling in in the interim. Get well, Tom!

So Craig Biggio finally has the keys to Cooperstown. It's much deserved after the lifetime Houston Astro had a very successful 20-year career. His buddy Jeff Bagwell still waits in the wings. He fell way short of the 75 percent of the votes needed to reach the Hall of Fame. He'll have a really good chance next year, along with Mike Piazza and first-year candidate Ken Griffey, Jr.

Along those same lines, the Astros certainly have improved their roster during this offseason and look to be significantly better with the additions of infielder Jed Lowrie (which will be his second stint in Houston), outfielder Evan Gattis, and relief pitchers Luke Gregerson and Pat Neshek. I'm liking these additions already.

By now, you all know who didn't show up at the recent Paris anti-terrorist rally. Not that that was going to be any real surprise to anyone. It shows you that this putrid presidential administration is completely uninterested in protecting Americans against terrorism. I've never taken Barack Obama seriously, and there's nothing that can convince me to think otherwise. And tomorrow night? The dreaded State of the Union address on television. I'm just waiting for a conservative to go into the Oval Office, so do you think I'm going to watch Darth Barry spew his spiteful venom on the tube? Not a chance. I doubt very many wise-thinking folks will be watching him insult our intelligence, either, because we've all had enough of it. At least, we have a Republican Congress to lean on with America's best interests at heart.

This writer is going to watch high school basketball tomorrow night. It's a lot more worthwhile.

It's Seattle and New England in the Super Bowl when the big game makes its way to Phoenix in just under two weeks. What an incredible comeback by the Seahawks yesterday against a Green Bay team that we thought had it going on. Prediction for the game? I've got it.

New England 31, Seattle 17. The Patriots will be too much for Seattle's defense.

Rex Ryan is now coaching the Buffalo Bills. Going from one end of New York state to the other, he's going to another club that tries to make big things happen and end up losing in the process. Maybe the son of Buddy will have more success with the Bills than he had with the Jets. Stay tuned for some great "Football Night in America" and "Sportscenter" highlights. Should be a real hoot.

Frisco (Texas) Independent School district officials are having second thoughts about the name of high school number 9. Lebanon High School would give the district two LHSs, and that didn't sit well with those who discovered that. Look for an adjustment to the name Lebanon, either before or after the name by one word, just to differentiate the still-constructed school from Liberty High School. High School number 9 opens in 2016.

FOX-TV is starting a new TV series called "Scream Queens" very soon. Here's a link to tell you about who will be starring in it.

What I am going to be doing in just a few weeks is going to be both painful and relieving all at the same time, but this is something that really needs to be done. It's been such a joy for me to come on to this fine website and share my life with you on the forums. From the Texas forums to the Music forums, I've enjoyed a really good relationship with you folks on here, and it means a lot to me when I've made your day. And I think I've done it quite often.

That said, after seven and a half fun years on the City-Data forums, it is with mixed emotions that I have decided that I am going to take a long sabbatical from the forums here at City-Data beginning January 31. Now, it'll just be from the forum pages only. I will continue to do my writings here on the blog pages, so I'm not going to completely disappear from view here. Ol' Case just needs to step back and chill a little bit. Posters, even really active posters, can get burned out after a period of time. I just happen to be one of those. If you've been stopping by these blog pages to read my stuff, then rest assured that you'll be able to continue to do so.

They say that all good things must come to an end. Well, for me, almost. But not entirely.

All of the traditions and regular events that make my presence what it is on the Music forums will cease after January 30. Trust me, this decision is not without a little pain, for I have many friends on here who I enjoy interacting with. No public announcements will be made out there, but you will see something in my status. This blog page, however, is where you will hear about things. I will be in touch with you to let you know what's happening with me. From Friday 3-Fers to Country Gold, I thank you for allowing me the privilege of sharing those things with you all these years. Please know that I don't know how long the sabbatical will be. I don't know. If I have an urge to get back on every now and then and post something, then I'll certainly do that. Knowing me, that urge will surface.

Please also know that I'm not mad at anyone and that no one else has influenced this decision but yours truly. The decision is mine and mine alone.

Right now, I need a rest. I need to do a few other things to make a difference for others away from my computer. But I'll certainly cherish my times with each of you.

It's not goodbye, folks. I'll settle for "see you later on". But please keep looking for me right here!

********

All the best to you as you stay warm this winter...........except, of course, on days when temperatures get into the mid '60s. When it does get cold, be sure to share your blankie!

And there you are.

Astros now are minus Dexter Fowler. He got traded to the Chicago Flubs in exchange for Dan Straily (pitcher) and Luis Valbuena (infielder). Straily will compete for the fifth spot in the rotation while Valbuena may end up platooning with Matt Dominguez at third. Both are good defenders, but it's Valbuena's lefty bat that has Houston buzzing. Meanwhile, they will miss Fowler. He could have been kept with the Astros one more year, as he'd be a free agent after the season to come.

And word is, Ryan Vogelsong is in Houston discussing possibly hooking on with the 'Stros. Stay tuned.

    Sabbatical???????

I'm sorry that you'll be going, but I understand how you've got to prioritize other things in your life. Glad to see that you'll still have your blog; don't ever quit that!

Hey, somebody else can keep your favorite threads from drifting down to Page 2.....

Yeah, I've got to get away for a while, mal. I've missed out on a few things while spending time on this site, and I just need to get out a little bit more. Now, remember, I will still come on to the blog pages, and of course, you can always reach me in my visitor box and direct messages, so those will stay open.

Thanks, as always, for your great words. Music has been a lot of fun.

Honestly, I'm not sure we'll ever really know what really happened or what Brady really knew. They found some balls deflated, but hopefully, the league will get everything right by the Super Bowl to make sure no cheating ever takes place (if, in fact, that's what happened). You'd think that Belichick and Brady would have known about those things during the course of the game.
