Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Interstate 27 Needs To Become A Reality For Texas' Mobility

Posted 02-03-2020 at 11:30 AM by case44

Too much time has passed, and West Texas needs something to get economic growth booming out there. Plus, additional mobility will be needed to more effectively move goods from the ports to the population centers.

I'm not suggesting we start neglecting Interstate 69 and Texas' ongoing plans for it. Not in the least. But we need to start looking west to find an alternative to I-35 now that ample improvements have been or already are being done to that interstate. West Texas is ripe for the picking.

It's a can being kicked around right now, but Interstate 27 needs to come to fruition.

Enough had been said earlier about traffic counts. Forget about those. A new north-south interstate tying Laredo with San Angelo, and eventually northward to Lubbock will bring new economic growth the likes of nothing which West Texas and Southwest Texas had ever seen. Never mind the prospects of a new road north of Amarillo; we'll deal with that in due course. Areas south of the Lubbock area have too much potential not to have a viable corridor to move freight and other goods from ports such as Laredo.

And look at San Angelo. What an opportunity for a boost that city could easily have. A potential route could connect the southern part through the east side and circle around to the north, eventually joining U.S. Highway 87. And just as important is seeing Downtown Lubbock at mile marker 524 instead of 4 on this improved I-27. Yes, it's that far from a potential terminus at I-35 just eighteen miles north of Laredo, either over the existing U.S. 83 or a new road parallel to it.

Talk is one thing, and for years, that's all it's been, but it's not like officials haven't had plans or ideas for such an undertaking. Look at the towns this potential route could have: Catarina, Asherton, Carrizo Springs, Eagle Pass, Elm Creek, Radar Base, Quemado, Del Rio, Sonora, Eldorado, Christoval, San Angelo, Grape Creek, Carlsbad, Water Valley, Broome, Sterling City, Forsan, Big Spring, Ackerly, Los Ybanez, Lamesa, Arvana, O'Donnell, Tahoka, Wayside, and Woodrow. And there could be more just in that route.

For the entire region's sake, it's time for Interstate 27 to make itself known. Too much time has passed. A project of this magnitude can not only open a new can of worms, but it can take some of the heavy pressure off of an overburdened Interstate 35.

While you’re at it, you may as well put in a 27W that goes from Lamesa to Midland/I-20.

What will probably happen, shoe, is for that Midland connect to be called I-127, similar to I-369 in East Texas. I doubt they'll go the letter route there, but with a potential I-14 from the southeast, you might see letters with that project, at least from what I've read. Could be 14N from Brady to San Angelo to Midland, and 14S in the south.
