I've noticed that some treasured City Data posters have disappeared without any notice. I thought this was kind of disappointing and in a way thoughtless. As it turns out, it is a violation of City Data rules to let people know that you are taking a break from posting.

WHY?!?!?!?

This is a policy that needs to be changed.

That's one part of the TOS I've never understood either. I have no plans to leave, but I'll be interested in the rationale for that rule.

People who are taking a break can DM anyone they like.

Most forums don't allow "I'm leaving" messages because they are so often left by disgruntled posters who got their noses bent out of shape and rarely by folks who are just taking a brief sabbatical.

Because a thread to indicate that one is leaving would be off-topic in every forum? Posters and the act of posting on the board are not the topic in any forum here. Even in this forum, we're discussing the forum, not individual posters.

I wish they could post at least a brief message too. A moderator could edit it if they went off on the forum, mods, or whatever. It is odd when people just disappear. In some cases you have reason to wonder if something bad has happened to them.

If you want to take your ball and play elsewhere the powers that be don't want it to be some great big draw attention to me sort of deal.

Except the rule isn't against "I'm leaving" threads, it's against "I'm leaving" messages.

Wrong, they can't DM lurkers.

And in that case, what's the harm in letting them tell people they are leaving?

Sorry. Not much worried if lurkers are informed of anything.

And, again? They can DM any other posters. I'm not seeing the problem.
