Do City Data lurkers see ads? Does City Data make money off of those page views? I thought so, but correct me if I'm wrong.

The moderator with the username "meh_whatever" says "Not much worried if lurkers are informed of anything", a statement which, combined with the username, indicates a striking contempt for the City Data community, not to mention contempt for Advameg's profit.

To Roadtrip75: I don't understand what you are talking about, so perhaps you would consent to explaining to me in greater detail. First, I suppose by "City-Data community" you mean those of us who have signed up, chosen a user name, agreed to the TOS, and have made a few (or perhaps many) posts.

Second, I suppose by "lurkers" who mean people who just read our posts but do not themselves post? If so, couldn't you answer you own question about the ads by just not logging on and looking at a few threads as a non-member would see them?

What difference would it make if non-members see the ads? I mean, what difference to us members? Of course the owner of C-D would want to maximize his profit - that is just normal. But as a member I don't see how it affects me.

As far as moderator "meh_whatever"s user name, I have noticed that name before but never gave it any particular thought, other than that it is unusual. It never occurred to me to think that the name showed contempt for me as a member of City-Data. Doesn't the name indicate indifference? I personally do not take the next step by concluding that that moderator is indifferent to me or to anyone else here. Please explain why you think that.

Likewise with the quote. Why would any of us - moderators or regular members - be "much worried" one way or the other concerning "lurkers"? Are you a person who has paid for ads here and has a concern about the ads being seen as widely as possible? If so, that would be a clue to my understanding what you are getting at.

Note that I am not saying you are wrong, but rather that I do not understand your point. I cannot conclude that something is either right or wrong if I do not understand the point. Thanks for any help you can give me.

To the answer the question in the title, yes, they do. It is important to remember that moderators are volunteers (doing a great job to make this forum popular), not our employees, and we cannot and do not want to control their views. Speaking as a company, the guests make up the majority of readers, so they are obviously very important and valuable to us.

To put this into context, I stated that I was not concerned whether lurkers were informed when registered members decided to leave the forum or go on a posting holiday.

I stand behind that statement.

I do, of course, hope that lurkers find the site content informative. I was merely addressing a complaint about our policy forbidding posters from creating "So long, I'm leaving" types of threads, which tend to be disruptive to the site.

As for my username? I have always struggled to think of names for Internet sites.

I tried a couple and they were taken. So, I figured I'd just use whatever

It was an attempt to be casual, not negative. No need for anyone to over think it.
