I get so annoyed when I click on a thread only to find out that someone replied to a thread from 2008. Why is this allowed on the site? There is no way to change this at all?
We do not choose to disable the ability to respond to an old thread. Often a question that was asked five or six years ago is still relevant today, and still merits discussion.
You can always look at the icon next to the thread name and spot an old thread from the fact that the icon is a medium-blue clock face with the hands pointing to about 7:50, and just not click on it. Or, if you open a thread and discover it's an old one, just move on. You haven't lost anything by clicking on it, and who knows, maybe you'll still find something of interest even if it is "ancient."

Why does it bother you??
I always am confused myself,WHO CARES WHEN A THREAD WAS LAST REPLIED TO!!!!!! (On 1 site i replied to a thread once with a last reply from 1999) -- Who cares!!!!!!!!

If this is your biggest concern of the day I would say you are having a pretty good day today. Just click New Post and move on.

Because the poster can just start a new thread instead responding to a thread from 5 years.
All revived threads have this icon next to them , so if you want to skip them, it's easy. Many people still view old threads and updating them with new information is useful to them.
Because the poster can just start a new thread instead responding to a thread from 5 years.
But not every thread from 5 years ago is irrelevant. For instance, it makes perfect sense to post your latest experience at a local restaurant in a 5 year-old thread that celebrates the opening of that restaurant. Or to post an update on new information about a legal case in a thread that was started 5 years ago when the case appeared in the courts.
It's far more helpful to have all of the information about those topics in a single thread than spread out across multiple threads.
Most of the time there is no need for a new thread for restaurant reviews, how to fix a toilet, etc.
The only time I see a new thread would have been more appropriate is when a poster finds the thread via having a similar but different problem and is seeking answers that aren't in that thread. It's unlikely people will see their post because many members will read the beginning of the thread and respond to the original topic because they don't see the new post buried deep in the thread. Instead of berating the new member for posting in an old thread, I recommend they start a new thread because others might not see their post and they'll likely get a response in a new thread.
There's an excellent old thread in the dog forum that Dash created when her dog had a certain type of cancer. That thread has been resurrected hundreds of times and has attracted many new members whose dogs have the same cancer. It is a wealth of information on that topic and everyone keeps adding new tips and new treatments as the years go on.

Exactly..... Or like the thread i referenced above..... THAT SITE HAS ALOT OF USEFUL FILES!!!
What.... That thread supposed to go UNREAD/UNREPLIED TO just because it was posted years ago??
Nonsense...... New members, etc havent seen it (I hadnt seen it before i found it) and the link posted was STILL VALID so why not reply??
