What is this "reputation" business? I take it people get those points for seemingly useful comments.. Who gives them? Can one trade the points in for shoelaces or kazoos or those paddles with the rubber ball attached with an easily breakable piece of elastic? Can they be taken away for comments that are not at all useful, leaving a person with a negative reputation?

Not a failing one, so needs no bailout.

Well, yes, but minus the "seemingly". You have 30. Every new member gets the first 10 for free. As soon as someone really finds a post of yours to be useful, fun, inspiring, poetic, brilliant, fill in the blank, you will suddenly find you have more.
Who gives them?
Any other contributors who read a post of yours and want to give you applause.

Only kazoos. Or are they kazooes? Members with gold stars can trade reps in for hanging chads.

Only on "Jeopardy". This game isn't as dangerous. There are only plusses on City-Data.
Hope this was helpful...
Someone repped you (notice how the concept changes parts of speech...). Click on "My Settings" and then open "Latest Reputation Received" to find out if the repper left a comment.

If you received a negative comment, please contact Markablue or Yac for correction.
Thank you all for your clear and precise explanations. And really, I did look for something like an FAQ before I posted my question. I will try to find out about those gold stars (hanging chads!!) on my own!

An no, I've not received any negative comments.
