They were coming at the police with machetes and spears, so what are the police supposed to do? That said, a multinational mining corp. paying them from $3,600 to $6,000 a year to break their backs doing an extremely dangerous job is obscene. Asking for a piddly $18,000 isn't unreasonable. If that Platinum mine was in Canada, Australia or the US they'd be making a hell of a lot more than that.
