Do you see a lot of squirrels where you live? There was a concerted effort to move squirrels into the cities in America during the 19th centuries. Moreover, are dassies of South Africa considered the local equivalent of a squirrel or are there Scuirus and Callosciurus species?

Then you clearly never been. https://rainforests.mongabay.com/03mammals.htm

Not a single European country is on the list of most mammal species. Obviously their is size differences and biome differences, but clearly plenty of mammals exist. The main problem with squirrels would be the fact that their is more natural predators of squirrels throughout the majority of Africa than most of North America.

Smaller mammals are more numerous, everywhere. The most abundant are bats, and you can amaze your friends by telling them that most mammals can fly.

A squirrel was regular around my hotel in Sri Lanka.
