Humans have trouble with empathy when the people that they should empathize with and be able to draw comparisons to, look different than they do. The fact is that cruelty (and religion) are global problems. You know what's a peaceful religion? Not having one. When I do something good for someone, I'm doing it because I have empathy and I genuinely believe that the world would be a better place if we all helped one another. I don't do it for some silly notion of heaven. Nor do I punish others because I purport to be doing God's dirty work.
If we're going to rail against Islam, and we should, I firmly believe we should hold Christianity, et. al to similar standards, and in the West, "we" do not.
