Hello. I hope I can get some honest opinions/facts. I have been considering moving to Canton from Michigan for quite sometime now. I am a single parent. What are the schools like? What are the residents overall like? How is it gaining employment? I have childcare, home health aide, and teacher assistant experience under my belt, but I am not beneath working at Walmart until better comes along. Is there adequate affordable housing? I only have 6 months to make a definite decisions on where to relocate. Please give me lots of feedback. If Canton is not very desirable please suggest places in the Akron-Cleveland area. *I am not looking for a Utopia because I realize crime exists. Oh and if it helps I am African American.

Are you looking for certain city neighborhoods, or would you prefer suburban living? Akron/Canton has some great suburbs and Akron has some really awesome neighborhoods that offer a lot for a city of its size. Housing is extremely affordable, you will not have a problem in that department I will promise you that.

Questions:

What specific employment are you looking for?

Akron/Canton is an area of 1.1 million people, there are plenty of areas to look into. What kinds of schools, neighborhoods, shopping, food, etc are you looking for?

I moved to NE Ohio from Boston, they people here are some of the nicest I have been around.

I would suggest North Canton area or Jackson Township area of Canton. What is your budget like? Do you have money to tide you over until you can find employment in the area?

If you make the move with an open mind and determination to make it work, you will most likely really enjoy living in the area. In 2007, I moved from the Lansing, MI area to just outside of Akron. Friendly people, nice areas and beautiful area to live in. The region may be home to 1 mil people, but you hardly realize it!

I am no longer in the area, so I can't suggest anywhere to look for housing or employment.

Differences you'll notice with this area vs. MI: there are required vehicle emissions testing for this region in OH; auto insurance is "at fault" instead of "no fault" - we were very happy to make this switch; there are school levies / annual school taxes in some districts that you have to file, so be prepared to look into that for the area you consider; no Meijer - you will have a hard time finding a replacement if you're a Meijer shopper; you really do need to keep an eye on your speeding while traveling - OH cops aren't joking around.

Ohio has some great school choices throughout the state, so finding a good district should be relatively easy. Rental pricing can vary depending on where you look. For example, the townhouse we rented was in a very small town, 2 bed/1bth for $500/mth.
