So in California if you called, say, a plumber, delivery guy, cable guy, whatever.. you get a random dude with questionable manners and often a limited capacity to communicate in English. If you got someone polite and coherent it was a pleasant surprise.

So far in Alabama, I have more often than not opened my door to find a really pretty boy with this cute southern drawl who makes eye contact and calls me 'ma'am'.

I like the South.

But we are poor, racist, uneducated backwood hicks. We have no industry, jobs don't pay,its hot,the humidity is high,we have snakes, bugs, alligators.
I just don't understand why we don't all move to New York.

Yes, but in Alabama said plumber, carpenter or cable guy will say they will show up on Tuesday morning... which means anywhere from the Friday before to the Thursday after.

All the pretty guys must be going to your house, Jen...

Well, to be fair, since we are strictly dealing with warranty issues, all the guys coming to my house are sub-contracted by the developer... who I believe was very selective about hiring the most reliable/reputable folks. But in my day-to-day, I end up meeting a lot of transplant engineers and their spouses/kids - the plumbers and such however, have been mostly locals.
