Killen - very small, very rural. Church plays an important part in everyday life. The children of the residents I know went to Brooksville? Brooks? High School, not sure about elementary. It's an excellent school. They were also BIG into soccer. Not much for youngsters to do there, so that's why parents keep 'em busy with sports!
Although it's rural, you're within 30 minutes of Athens and the Florence areas, about an hour to Huntsville. You're also quite close to the Tennessee River.

Killen is rural. Elem school is Brooks. It is rather large but actually has a good reputation. The HS is also Brooks and is large and rather Rough. It is very close to Florence, only a few miles East. Shoals Creek winds around parts of the town, which is just off the main Tenn River. With the exception of Shoals Creek there is nothing to do in this town. Huntsville is a little over an hour away. Florence has a Target and Walmart. The mall has a few surviving stores, otherwise most of the stores have folded. I lived in Killen for a while on the creek. If you live on the water it is tolerable. However most kid activites ( docters, dentists, kids sports, lessons, etc)will require the drive to Florence and I found it was not worth the hassle to make the drive, it was easier to live in Florence. Hwy 72 is thee most congested road in the county, and has thee largest volume of traffic. Not to mention most attend churches in the Florence area also. There are only a few, tiny churches in the Killen area.

Killen although rural, does have some nice housing developments. I think most kind of view Killen as an extension of Florence. Turtle Point is located in Killen. It's like the premier gated community in the Florence area. I don't really like gates because it's snotty, but they have a well regarded golf course. There's also Saddlebrook, which has a lot of million dollar homes. But it's fairly new. Then there is Deer Creek Village and Plantation Village (I loathe the name of any subdivision with plantation as part of the name, but what can I say, it is the South.) These are all of the good subdivisions in the Killen area.

Brooks Elementary is a great school. And like I mentioned in the Florence thread, you can send your kids to school in Florence for free, but you'll have to drive them. Even though you don't have to worry about it, I would personally send my kids to Florence High. It has the best academics of any school outside of Huntsville in the North Alabama area.
