For that, I think you can blame...Andrew Jackson??
Of course, then our state would be a boring rectangle...instead of a rectangle with two little feet!!

I do agree with bluebeard (see below). Then again...it might put the Florabama out of business. And we wouldn't want that!

Haven't read all the way through the thread, but if Alabama would open its mind up to allowing casinos in the state, maybe we'd get more tourism. People visit the casinos in Louisiana and Mississippi and they don't seem to be causing any problems. I personally, have been to a few of them and enjoyed the opportunity to see some musical acts while there. The state gov't and whomever else is keeping this out of the state, really isn't doing anyone any favors. JMO!!

I'm jumping in late to this discussion, but when I lived in Texas, I travelled across Alabama, through Selma and Montgomery, on my way to Savannah, GA. When the hurricane hit a couple of years later, I joked with my daughter that they wouldn't be able to tell where it hit. Not to make light of natural disasters, but Alabama in 2004 was the dumpiest of the five states (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia) that I travelled across. I found the Selma area to be very depressing and intimidating and not at all like I expected. I expected to see quaint and charming Southern towns. I didn't.

You went through the most depressed area of the state, so that's no surprise. I've lived in this state my whole life and even I wouldn't go to Selma.

I can think of some areas in Louisiana that look worse than anything I have ever seen in Alabama.

Well, I am from that area and what is happening in our state government is futhering the problem. Poverty is destroying the black belt no jobs. Try b-i-n-g-o! It's 2010 Alabama.

Perhaps if enough people who wouldn't stand for racism and the other bad parts of Alabama moved here, the popular opinion would start to change. Yes, I agree with you, but I don't think it has to be that way, and I think other people could change it.
The problem is that most people in Alabama are still intolerant. Just look at the political ads on TV. The new ones. The assumption is that the vast majority of Alabamians are extreme right wing bible thumping Obama hating haters of anything that could be considered progressive. The sad thing is I think they're right. The ads are not blatently racist like the ads were from Wallace, Patterson and their ilk back in the 50's and 60's but the language is thinly veiled. You're right, other people could change it, but first you would have to get rid of most of the people who are already here. That's not going to happen.

So...let's say all native Alabamians go shoot themselves, or at least move to Mississippi and Georgia. Then Alabama would be more attractive to visitors?

This thread has, like many others, degenerated into one that is all about kicking Alabama. Moderator, please consider locking it!
