One of my friends and I have made plans to move to Ketchikan around November. Anything I should know before we move? And how is the general area around the city and surrounding suburbs? How is the crime?

Surrounding suburbs, eh? Oh hell they're great. The crime is pretty good too.

Ketchikan has suburbs? I don't believe it's really that big.

City of Ketchikan

There are some occasional Ketchikan trooper reports here:

Cantwait01, you do know that Ketchikan is a 7,000 person town in the middle of the biggest temperate rainforest in the world, off the road system and wedged around a mountain sticking out of the ocean, right? Half the city isn't even on land.
Not a suburb in sight.

Excellent. I was aware of the location of the city. We have been researching where we will be moving. Ketchikan seems to be the place for us. How is the job situation there? Is there a high unemployment rate? That is one of the statistics, that I have not been able to locate so far. Thanks guys.

Jobs in Ketchikan are hard to come by without qualifications. It is pretty much dependent on the timber, fishing and tourist industries.

I wouldn't say jobs are hard to come by. Now the quality of the jobs could be another story. Most newcomers that will stick it out usually end up doing okay. I had some tenants in our duplex that moved up from Nevada. After the 4th week they were ready to pack their junk and go home.

8 years later they are still there, both teach for the school district and they own a house with a nice view of the narrows.

Why would you come in November? If I was moving to Ketchikan I would get there in April. That way you can get at least a couple of jobs during tourist season and make some valuable contacts for the winter.

Crime? It's rampant. Horrible crime. Murder, robbery, drunkeness, they have it all.......

moving up in nov may have it's advantages. you may stand a better chance of getting a place to live without paying a forture. be ready for sticker shock tho. bring enough $$$$ to support yourself thru the winter tho, just in case.
at the worst you may be able to negociate an extended stay rate at a motel or inn.

OP doesn't sound like he/she has done enough homework to even discern about moving there. Or am I missing something?

Seems to be alot of that lately. Basically threads and posts "I'm moving to Alaska...what do I do?". You move your butt up here and decide for yourself whether you like it or not. How and when you get here is on you. Every town is unique as well as it's people. No town is any better than the other. You just have to poke around and find one that you like or likes you.
