My husband and I lived in Kodiak for about two years( he's in the cost guard) we were just relocated to Key West, Fl and we miss Alaska so much..we're going to try to be transferred back to Alaska during his next transfer season...does anyone know if Ketchikan is anything like Kodiak..is it better or worse? Any advice would be great, thank you!

No offense to Kodiak... But in my opinion, Ketchikan is the "prettier" place.

Ketchikan gets about twice as much rain as Kodiak.

Both have their positives...pretty similar communities really. kodiak quick forty minute jet flight to anc whereas Ketchikan has the short flight to sea tac. To me that's one of the biggest differences between the two.

I know, was just poking at you!

Both places have their positives and Negitives. Ketch is bigger and has more shopping choices, although Kodiak is catching up!

Winters are milder in Ketch and much less wind, they both get a lot of rain so if you didn't go nuts from the rain in one place, then you won't have issues in the other and know what "Sunshine Liberty" is!

The Coast Guard has housing options in both places or will pay you a housing allowance to live in town.

Good luck on where ever you guys drop the hook!

Ketchikan measures it's rain fall in feet vs inches. The cruise lines/ships run the community. I have lived and worked in both places and would go back to Kodiak anytime. Ketchikan I have no desire to ever return to. You have a better class of people more to do and it is more Alaska than the morph that has been wrought upon Ketchikan. Sold my home in Kodiak in 1998 and have regretted it ever sense but being married to a Ranch women and having livestock Alaska did not make economic sense. I will return!!!!!

I'm a single guy, in the CG as well, can't make up my mind between Ketch or Kodiak. Love the out doors, but I'd like to be able to visit civilization every once in a while, any suggestions? I would think it would be easier to visit Anch. from Kodiak then Juneau from Ketch.?

Go to Kodiak. I like Ketchikan, but for what you're looking for, Kodiak is a better fit. Juneau isn't much more than Ketchikan as far as city-stuff. Flights to Seattle aren't too long, though.
