Fabulous pictures!!! On your 6th picture down, there is reddish foliage on the upper slopes of the mountains. I noticed that today when I was driving on the Alaska Highway. I am not familiar with the flora up here. Do you know what it is? It looks beautiful in the fall. Thanks for the shots!

Alright...Skinny Dick's is still open!

Off the subject of the Parks Highway for a second but drove by Gwin's yesterday and was surprised to see it closed and for sale.

Barely! Never seems to be too much happening there whenever I pass by.

That can be one of several things (blueberry bushes, bear berry, old fireweed, etc), but it's usually the dwarf birch that turns whole mountainsides red. It's abundant in the lower tundra of the interior mountain ranges, and also interior lowland bogs, among the black spruce trees. It changes early and goes quick, but catching it with low angle sunlight at its peak (around the 1st of September) is an extraordinary sight!

The owner commited suicide. Sad to see the place sitting empty. They always had the best smoked salmon chowder. I see the sign out front has fallen over already. Won't be long and it'll be stripped of anything usefull if somebody doesn't pick it up and maintain it.

I had heard about the suicide and it did close for awhile afterwards and then reopened for a bit. I stopped in last September for a bowl of chowder and an Amber and had hoped to do the same again. Dadgummit.
