BARROW, Alaska — The ancient whale hunt here is not so ancient anymore.

“Ah, the traditional loader,” one man mumbled irreverently. “Ah, the traditional forklift.”

Quite a nice place eh ? Yes it is. But... the smaller villages are even better. You just would not believe .. .. how quiet it is.

Point Hope uses no (heavy) ..equipment ... they do it all in the traditional manner. There are big differences between the villages as to how they do things.

Barrow has the resources so they use them whenever possible.

So... when a whale is received & harvested. Just how do you get it un-stuck when there is no heavy equipment around out here.

Just tell me what idea you have that can get this whale un-stuck? How is this done ??

How are you going to move 40 tons ?? that is stuck in the sand in shallow waters very far from anything available.

Hi,
Yikes perhaps a fork lift won't do!?

Am I naive to have thought that it would have helped?
Jen
p.s. my family is mixed evenly between Native and Non and I particularly liked the comment about the traiditional Fork lift, (I am considering as being playfully said by an Indigenous person a la the humor of "dance me outside" sort of humor....you know, the "traditional fork lift.") Then again I am very partial to using modern amenities...I do drive and use electricity myself and would also call them "traditional" ;P

just a guess but wait for the tide to go out and harvest what you can while the tide is out...many hands make quick work of the largest of projects.

This location is miles & miles from any heavy equipment and I don't know of one sane operator that would attempt to drive out over the ice into the water..........!

It required many hours; and 5 power boats tied together couldn't budge that whale. so how did they accomplish this impossible feat ?

I can't wait to hear from some of the 'experts'.
