People get bored during the long winters and find all sorts of novel ways to pass the time. Thinking up names like
Val-dis-eze and
Meth-silla are just another way to pass time, and maybe show a little affection/rivalry towards other cities since there are so few of us up here.
Also may be a thing Alaskans have for names. Just like no-one up here uses numbers to refer to the highways. They are Richardson, Steese, Seward, Elliot, etc. You can always spot a tourist when they ask how to get to somehwere "do I take Hwy 1 or Hwy 2?" Usually I look at them funny and can't answer because I don't even remember the numbers anymore. Maybe that's why they go away thinking Alaskans are a bit strange.
