Last I knew (a couple hours ago) my son was sitting in ANC, in a 6 hour layover during his flight from ALW to Kotzebue, where he took a 3 month contract. He's supposed to start work early tomorrow AM, no less. And isn't even slightly prepared for trying to sleep through the "midnight sun", though last time I looked at the webcam, it was foggy and rather dark.

He took this rather sudden offer of a job, and we tried to warn him that Kotzebue is "long sleeve" weather at best and cold the rest of the time

On a side note... Isn't anyone ever going to get into competition with GCI (General Criminals Inc) so they introduce prices that aren't insane?

I wish your son the best. Sometimes you just have to let your kids figure it out on their own. (After you have warned them and given them all the information you can)

GCI spent a fortune to expand their wireless network in Western Alaska. I would be surprised if another company would be willing to make that invest for such a limited pool of customers.

Even after the expansion, the service is still spotty here. Still having dropped calls and now we finally have data that actually works. They were charging us data services and it never did work.

They were also paid fortunes by various government agencies. Basically, they've been making out like bandits with their network investment paid mostly by public dollars.

LOL! Well, that's always been the case.

Just the same, I don't think they adequately warned him, shame on them.

Yes, I failed to mention that GCI didn't dig into their own pockets... But I'm guessing they drained that pool of government funds dry. So I doubt any competitors will be popping up.

Yep. Shame on them, but remember that old cliche'. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

It is still a learning experience. And for my next cliche', That which does not kill you, makes you stronger.

And your Son is lucky to have you to help bail him out if needed...
