i'm 20 years old from Virginia and I have a job right now and I want to save up about $10 to $20,000 before I go up there so when I get there I can use that money to live off until I find a job. I want to know more about Alaska like where are there a lot of jobs? Where can I rent a cabin to live in? and I just want to know really everything about it. I have a 4 wheel drive car right now and I've been wanting to move to Alaska for a while. I just want to know more before I go.

First task is to figure out where in Alaska you'd like to live. This website has a brief summary on each area: Six States of Alaska

Visiting is great if you can do it. Take a couple of weeks and drive around. It still only exposes you to a small percentage of the state. However, most people will tell you and I happen to agree, that starting out near a "City" is a good thing. Fairbanks and the surrounding area seem to have the market on renting cabins to live in, from Dry, to Damp, to wet. I have looked at a couple of houses that are close to living in a cabin around here in Anchorage, but most likely to do that you are going to be further out of Anchorage.

Saving up that kind of coin is good, as long as, you are driving up with only what will fit in your car.

Many threads here to read and some of them have good ideas for road trips and places to go and see. You can get to Juneau by car Ferry if you want to check that area out.

Alaska generally is not cheap to move to or live in. The salaries are a little better to help compensate for that though. If you live in a major US city that has lots of taxes and a high COLA (D.C., NYC, LA, Miami, etc...) than it could be a lower COLA for you, assuming you are not living in the "Bush" where you can only get supplies from the one general store that is 50 miles each each way away and/or have to fly your supplies in.

If you live in a rural area of Virginia, you may get some sticker shock. I am by no means an expert - however, we did just move here and I am happy to answer any questions you have that I can.

Why couldnt you have just answered the young man's question? If he can get direct answers to his direct questions, that would be so much more useful to him than thumbing thru threads looking for specific questions and answers that may or may not be there.

Understandable. There are many ways you could do that.....why Alaska specifically?

We're moving to Alaska ourselves....but I love the cold and have been up there in the winter and summer months both.

Alaska is pretty far for most people to ever consider moving....because it is so far removed from the rest of the country, not to mention most people don't tolerate its winters well.

Personally, I love it there and feel like I've "come home" whenever we are there.
